Rooms for rent, $2 per week!

Last weekend, walking around downtown Portland, Oregon, I saw this sing on the side of a building, perhaps a hundred years old. I could not include the bottom of the sign due to a construction fence, but it says, "Hot and Cold Running Water."
That sounds pretty luxurious for its time and I wonder if that $2 was a big expense when the sign was painted?
Old signs on buildings and things like murals catch my eye and I always want to get a photo. Do you notice things like that?

Maybe the room was expensive back then though, at 2 bucks per week ,I don't know. Love those old signs.

You got me curious...had to look up what people made/year 100-ish years ago. Looks like it usually ranged from $500-600 a year. So, roughly $57 a month. Food was a lot cheaper to (7 cents for a loaf of bread, 34 cents for a dozen eggs).
Seems like $2 a week wouldn't have been too expensive. Probably a lot better, comparatively speaking, than the prices we pay nowadays.

@Genipher Maybe it would be okay if you did not have to stay a week. Interesting prices.

@JamesHxstatic When my dad started working back in the early 60's; he was only making a little over a dollar an hour.

Gives us an insight as to how far our money has devalued.

I love things like that. I think at the time - that must have been quite the sum of money.

But that might be accompanied by a like reduction in income. It's always something!

Wow that sign is amazing! I love old signs and anything old like that.
That was most likely a lot of money to pay at that time. So strange how times have changed but cool at the same time.

Yes I have noticed things like that. Most likely that $2 was quite a bit those days.

Yes, it is expensive to stay in most hotels. Even Motel 6 is now $60 or more.
