This is a true story of a tragedy that lasted for 42 years before it silenced. I don't consider this as a response that will earn some money but a reality of the pain of a woman who spent more than 4 decades in Coma. Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug a young nurse who spent her 45 Years of life in a vegetative state when she was sexually assaulted and left behind to die. She was brtualy victimized by one of the hospital sweeper when Aruna was in the changing room in 1973. She was 24 years old when the incident occurred and since then she never gained consciousness. She was about to get married to a doctor of the same hospital, who use to visit by her lifeless body daily in hopes that she might. But like her consciousness her love story also faded away, he kissed her Goodbye on her forehead and never returned back. After being in Coma for 37 years an appeal for Euthanasia(mercy killing) for her was rejected by the Indian Court Of Justice. Aruna breath her last on 18 May 2015 the longest human soul to have been a vegetative state(Coma) for 42 Years. The story includes many tragedies associated with it which I won't be able to express it further because even writing this much has overwhelmed me with sorrow. This is tribute to soul of Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug 1948 to 2015, may God rest her soul in peace. Image Credit: Pixabay

That's really heartbreaking. I can't even begin to imagine those other tragedies you mentioned. What happened to the hospital employee who did that to her?

@kavinitu Only 7 years? Can't bear the thought of that person being able to walk away free after those 7 years.

@cahaya1983 He was sentenced to 7 years of prison and later released. In the 70s the law was not strict and even though now also it isn't. 7 years are nothing compared to 42 years of lifeless moments

That's a very long time. I couldn't believe this story. I'm sorry for what happened to her life. Did she find justice?

@lady1993 Justice just 7 years prison to the culprit who did that horrifying crime. 42 years lifeless is a long long time compared to 7 years.

The poor woman. Seemed as it was the nurse union at the hospital who fought against the petition of Aruna's close friend who had begged the court to let Aruna go. The nurses wanted to take care of Aruna.

Very heartwarming, I wanted everyone to know that a person like her existed who never saw the world for 4 decades even though she existed.
