Well, I think Opal has reached that critical 4 pound threshold that the discount spay/neuter clinics require to be spayed. So, I went to their website and signed her up. They sent me back a confirmation for January 31st being the first available date. A year ago about this time was when I got Stinker, at the boarding house where Connie was living when she died, to get her spayed. "L," who was feeding Stinker, wanted to know if I was still going to get Stinker spayed. Of course I said "yes." Sure enough, I picked up Stinker the day before so I wouldn't have to go over and hope they had the kitten in the carrier. Opal is still very small for a five and a half month old kitten. However, she has finally reached the size she needs and will be over six and a half months. I firmly believe that pet cats should be fixed. I also believe that feral cat colonies should be fixed. Having said that, the cat we think is Opal's mom managed to not get trapped, if she had been we wouldn't have Opal.

You are so right about fixing cats. Owners are obliged to fix their cats here, if they want to let them roam free in the gardens. The municipality takes care to fix the feral cats.

I agree, people should fix their pets. I know there are people out there breeding "purebred" animals for the pet store market, and I wish more places would forbid the sale of kittens and puppies, meaning that only rescued pets would be there.

@ElicBxn I agree, the pet stores should be banned, there are so many animals that need to be rescued from the shelters.

@LadyDuck its not the pet stores, its the selling of animals, especially the larger ones like cats and dogs.

I had both Sneezy (before he disappeared) and Lily spayed and neutered. I just have Lily now. My uncle needs to get Doodlebug neutered.

I'm glad you responsibly fix your pets, I have been known to fix cats who wander across my yard - and I can catch - before. I would still do it if I had a clinic that would fix them as quickly as mine used to. My low cost clinic is down to a vet and a tech, they are both aging and have stopped doing surgeries.

I hope all goes well for Opal. Feral cat colonies cause a lot of havoc, especially with animals that are endangered.

Cats can be pretty hard on the rodent population, but on birds it is another matter. They might raid a nest, but then the birds didn't do a good job of picking a location. Mostly they improve the population by catching old, sick and stupid birds. Really, a well controlled feral colony is fed, fixed and watched over, that way they will hunt, and like barn cats, will keep the mice and rats away from the area they are located at.
