Diary Wednesday 20th December 2017 A work dominated day, with no sign of the predicted winding down of the high work loads in sight. Normally the post office temps are laid off a few days before their contracts end but this year we will be working right to the last minute. Senior staff came round with cup-cakes for everyone today which was lovely. Diary Thursday 21st December 2017 The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the height of the pagan Midwinter Festival that predate Christianity by centuries. A time for druids to take to the sacred hills and stone circles to Worship the Sun. Work again dominated my day. We were told that we are off work on Friday but in on Saturday but this decision was reversed later with Saturday now optional rather than mandatory. As transport to work is problematic for me on Saturday I decided not to work then. Diary Friday 22nd December 2017 My last day on the post office job, and busy right to the last minute though we did clear all the work that was assigned to us, meaning Saturday will be easier for those still attending. We were all handed lollipop as we left though we had to return our photo-ID badges and Hi-Viz jackets. I got the last of my food shopping in, as I plan on not going out over the holidays, when most buses don’t run anyway. As I queued behind another customer waiting to load my shopping on the conveyer that carries the items to the cashier, the man in front of me dropped some of his shopping (trying to put too much on the conveyer at once). Several of his yoghurts split open, creating quite a mess. I felt sorry for him and helped him recover what we could, and the shop kindly replaced the damaged items at no extra charge, but the lie had to wait about fifteen minutes for the clean up team to mop up the spillage. Fortunately I was in no hurry. Back home I contacted welfare to let them know my job ervice has ended as I am now officially unemployed again. Arthur Chappell

I believe that the main celebration for Sun Worshippers actually falls on December 25th, which is why the Eastern and western doctrines got together and selected that date to worship the birth of Christ. The Sun Worshippers would build fires and dance around with burning torches to assist the Sun"s regeneration as the daylight gradually expanded. This was a miserable time of year so Christians joined in, so the church set this date so that they could claim that Christians were celebrating the birth of Christ and not a Pagan festival.

@arthurchappell I am aware of the date of the solstice, but the regeneration festivities began a few days later once the Sun had are a minor progress.

In some supermarkets the policy is - "you break it, you pay for it". How do you feel about leaving that job for good?
