Special K - what have you done?????

I know there are those among you who have pondered this same question for the past 3-4 years, but I haven't eaten Special K in far longer than that and was so looking forward to trying their limited edition Pumpkin Spice version. But, holy cow!!! What HUGE flakes you have, Grandma!! Some are larger than the width of my spoon!! Gone are the little puffs I remember - something akin to the shape of Rice Krispies, but a little larger. Easy to eat because they stay on your spoon as you're putting it in your mouth. No longer - these darned things hit your lips as you're trying to eat because they protrude out the sides, so you either have to make a second attempt or open your mouth the size of a cave to avoid dumping your spoon's contents on the way in. The texture is fine. But, the size!!! Kellogg's - not everything has to be 'biggy-sized'. They look like flakes, but they're much thicker. Why take a design that has worked for 100+ years and revamp it? Play with the flavors. Not the shape or size!! (Photo from Flickr with reusage rights.)

I go through moods where I'm really into a specific thing and then I take a break after it gets old, but I still like them. I just overdid it. I am not sure I'll get this again, though. I'm disappointed to say the least, but there is one that is chocolate that I might try - and one that has chocolate and dried strawberries that sounds interesting.

@marlina I don't buy Harvest Crunch, but I've had others that were similar. As long as they have raisins or craisins and maybe some granola chunks, I'm good. But, I have a very tight budget, so I keep the price as low as possible with store brands and off brands when I can.

I'll eat raisin bran, but it's so bland. I don't add sugar to my cereal, but do like to taste more than just dried grains. A cereal called Crispy Wheats and Raisins got my attention a while back. It's a General Mills branded cereal. But, it's just too expensive for me to buy regularly. I also like Post's Raisin Bran Crunch which is wheat bran flakes, raisins and granola crunchies. It's pricey, too, but the Aldi grocery store has a Millville version that I can get for $2 (half the price) that is just as good. Probably made by the same company, but branded for Aldi. I just don't get to get there often because of transportation.

@Hannihar It's funny - I like sliced bananas with milk and sugar (or just milk these days), but I don't want them on my cereal. My dad ate them that way and that's the only way besides peeling them that I like them. Although I have discovered some frozen dark chocolate covered slices that are pretty good, too, but again - that's a pricey and occasional treat.

@jerzgirl I love adding bananas to my cereal and when I eat oatmeal I add milk and sugar and banana.

I go through phases. There are some months when I just crave it and, if I don't have any, make sure I buy some during the next shopping trip. Other times I'll go months without wanting any. Sometimes I crave hot cereal. I LOVE chocolate Malt-o-meal, but I can't find it around here. I bought some without chocolate and add some chocolate protein powder to it when I'm in the mood to have it. Not quite the same, but it satisfies. That's pretty much the only way I'll eat chocolate.

I never eat flake cereals because they always get soggy.

If you're a purist, you put milk in your bowl first and sprinkle the cereal on top and eat it before it sinks into the milk. Then add some more and repeat until no more milk in bowl. But, these did stay crunchy quite a while, so they might work for you. Our Fruity Pebbles got mooshy long before these did.

I haven't had special K in a long time. After doing the special k diet for many months I stopped eating it. Alot of cereals have changed in the years though, i don't eat much of it anymore.

Sounds difficult to eat such large flakes. How is the taste?

The taste is pretty generic. I was disappointed there as well - the promised Pumpkin Spice was just not there. But, they weren't really all that bad. They stayed crunchy quite a while, so the texture worked. Just the size was odd.

I haven't had Special K in ages but I'd probably be surprised with those large flakes too.

I just told RasmaSandra that the promise of Pumpkin Spice got me to purchase this but there was little, if any, pumpkin spice flavor to be had. Maybe something, but not enough that I would know that's what it was supposed to be. It's perfectly edible, but not much different than no flavor at all. I didn't add sugar, so there was some mild sweetness. And, they stayed crunchy a while.
