It's 2:21am. I am coming to you live from a secret location in Colorado Springs with #4 in my countdown of my favorite funk songs: "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder
Interesting story behind Stevie Wonder's classic funk tune. Guitarist Jeff Beck was working with Wonder on Stevie's legendary 1972 album, Talking Book, with Wonder promising to write Beck a song in return. During a break, Beck began playing the song's drumbeat, over which Stevie improvised. They finished the first demo that day.
The plan was that Jeff Beck would release his version first, however, his album was delayed. Knowing that Wonder's take would be a big hit, Motown head honcho Berry Gordy Jr released it.
Gordy was correct. The single reached #1 on both Billboard's Hot 100 and R&B charts, and Top 20 status in four other countries, selling over 600,000 copies in the UK alone
In addition to Jeff Beck, "Superstition" has also been done by Stevie Ray Vaughan, and UB40.
I've linked to a video of Stevie Wonder performing the song on Sesame Street. There are no Muppets, but keep your eyes peeled, there is a kid that just goes off.
(Info verified by Wikipedia)
It doesn't get much better than this.... I can't imagine a better feel good song than this one! Check out the REST OF THE VIDEOS in this collection! Stop by ...

"When you believe in things you don't understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain't the way, yeh, yeh" are my favorite lines on that song.

These are some of Stevie's best lyrics. He was on a roll in the early 70's.

@FourWalls - That is very true. I could also have used "Livin' for the City." Or even "Boogie On Reggae Woman."

I almost used "Higher Ground," but I think this is just a bit more "funky."

Great post! I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder and I've always loved his music! Thanks for sharing the background info about "Superstition" too.
I have fond memories of Sesame Street, as I used to watch it with my little sister, who was born in 1972. I'm nine years older, but I still loved all the characters and the popular guests they featured on the show regularly. Great performance by Stevie and friends here!

Oh, you're welcome. I knew Jeff Beck had done the song, but I didn't know it was intended for him.

Love it ,even had the time down. I am thankful its not that time not or I would be all drunk and falling asleep. I make bad jokes. This song is so cool. Punk rock without being punk rock if you know what I mean. .

Both punk and funk are kind of hard to fake. You either have it or you don't.

I'm not a huge fan of Stevie Wonder. I like his music, but would never seek it out, so to hear it now and then is nice. This is one of his best songs.
