FOR HOW LONG?

When I was a child I believed that mews reports on radio and in the newspapers just had to be true - most of them anyway. As I grew older I began to take everything I read - "with a grain of salt". Now with all the focus there is on fake news I can't help wondering how long we have been fed fake news. Back in the day there was no internet and available fact checkers. These days we can't be sure of the veracity or truthfulness of many of the reports we read and hear - and it doesn't have to be something outrageous either - pretty normal sounding reports can be fake. So, have you ever been fooled by fake news? How long do you think it has been around?

I have surely been fooled by fake news and possibly I still do not know that those were "forged" facts that surely served a purpose. Anyway I am always very skeptical when I read something.

@LadyDuck What about those people who believe easily, people who don't think for themselves?

fake stories have existed since newspapers were first printed - the 17th century press in England actually accused the Irish of eating babies to encourage war againt them

The news stations (radio and tv) that I listen to seem to report the news and I don't think they report false news. However, some things on the internet are false so we have to check things out if we have any doubts.

@db20747 Yes, there are some news websites that only fabricate news. There are reputable sources and I stick to them for news.

Maybe not on purpose, but even reputable media houses can sometimes report falsehoods - but they later apologise.

Yes I have. For one when someone reported on an event that was a huge success and how fun it was and I was there and it totally sucked. They were trying to get more people to attend the next month. You have to look for or listen for keywords too, they say " allegedly" quiet often, to me that means its just hear say and there is no proof.

Those who happened to be there - like yourself would know that the event was a failure. So I am guessing that many who were there did not return the next month - however the report could have resulted in new unsuspecting attendees.

Fake news has been around from the beginning of print journalism. People forget that over 100 years ago the terms "muckrakers" and "yellow journalism" were created to describe sleezy and false news. In those days, "reporters" were considered "trash" just as actors and actresses.

You mean reporters of the sleezy and false news. I was a news reporter some years ago - a career which I doubt I would have pursued had I been around 100 years ago.

@Kandae11 That is good Kandase because it is very unfair to make up things that are not true at all and for people to actually believe the lies.

@Kandae11 I've always heard that two to six men, control all the news in the US. They can make the news anything they want. It's really sad, because I just want the truth.

Now anything I hear and read, especially on Facebook, I do my own research first to find out how true it really is. There is so much Fake news going around anymore it is really hard to know. But what bugs me even more is those who swear it is true and make a Big kaboo about it.

A lot of the fake news is taken as the truth - some people believe just what they want to believe.

Years ago I read about a television station owner who was arrested on suspicion that he sent hoodlums to commit murders - and he would be the first to report these deaths on his station.

I don't believe that most news is fake. We do have some reliable networks that I trust and first among them is National Public Radio.
