Shouldn't Fitted Sheets Fitted?

That's definitely not grammatically correct, and that raises another question: if "fitted sheets" are supposed to "fit," shouldn't they be called fit sheets instead of fitted sheets? Second-grade grammar questions aside, why don't "fitted sheets" fit? By the name they're addressed by, you would assume that they'd fit. No. I daily wake up and have to readjust the fitted sheet on my bed...because it doesn't fit. So much for the "fitted" sheet fitting.... Here's a country classic about sheets (that probably didn't fit, either):
This is the first track on the Jeanne Pruett album, "Satin Sheets" released on MCA Records in 1973.

My fitted sheets stay fitted on the corners but are wrinkled on the surface. It's almost like the corners are made to fit and the heck with the middle. Yes, they should fit.

Same here, they fit in the corners but after a few days of sleeping in the freshly washed sheets, they are not as comfortable.

'Fit' would imply that these sheets get upset and angry with us. Instead, it's the individual who has a 'fit', when they never stay in place! Fitted, is past tense. So I didn't throw a fit today, but I fitted yesterday when I first woke up. Does this make any sense to you? No, I didn't think so

Makes perfect sense to me! I don't throw fits too often.

It makes perfect sense to me. Then again, if I throw a fit because my fitted sheets don’t fit, that’s not the way I planned on getting fit for the new year. Glad I don’t drive a Honda Fit.

Well first of all the fitted sheets have to be for a certain size bed single, double, king and so on and then the sheets should have elastic that can tightly wrap around the mattress. Here in Latvia they have fitted sheets but they're expensive so I just use regular sheets and tuck them around the mattress. As a result me and the mattress along with the sheet are doing the tango all night long.

I don't have too much trouble with getting them to fit although sometimes with a deep mattress they are battling to reach.

I've sewn elastic strips on so-called fitted sheets to make them more "fitted."

I usually make adjustments on my sewing machine. I like fitted sheets to fit smoothly.
