It Was A Dark and Stormy Night

My friend Joan lived in a haunted house. It was haunted in a nice way. The ghost liked her and kept her safe and happy along with her four children in the small town of Pratt, Kansas. The ghost hid things that Joan and the children would find in strange places. Joan was a stay-at-home-mom with four children. One night she asked me to babysit for a couple of hours. I took my daughter with me and at bed time, she went to bed with the other children. I was watching TV while I used Joan's sewing machine. I don't remember what I was making but it was probably fabulous when done. All of a sudden the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I could feel someone standing behind me. I knew the ghost was standing there. I slowly stood up and turned around. Out loud I told the ghost (that I couldn't see) that I knew he was there and that he should know I was Joan's friend. I told him I loved Joan too. In a minute that feeling disappeared. I didn't get any more sewing done that night. I watched TV until Joan and her husband got home and quickly left the house with my child. Joan and her kids loved the house and were happy there. Her husband changed jobs at the end of the school year and so did my husband so we both moved out of Pratt, Kansas the same summer. Before I moved I spoke with a neighbor of Joan's. I asked about the empty house. She said a young couple moved into the house on the weekend and moved out the next day. The reason they moved so fast was when they got up in the morning, they found their house a mess, their living room furniture was in the kitchen, the kitchen furniture in the bathroom and nothing was in the place it was the night before. The neighbor (who knew the house was haunted) said the only people who have lived in that house comfortably since it became a rental were people with children. She wondered out loud if the ghost might be a child. We will never know, but that is a possibility. Have you ever met a ghost?

@JudyEv I agree, my friend had children, the next couple didn't, was a good story anyway, we moved on to another job shortly after the conversation with the neighbor.

Wow! I haven't met a ghost, but I've certainly had many paranormal experiences. I should write about them when I have time.

I lived 3 years in a haunted house. The ghost was only making noise, not moving things, but I often heard him walking near me, climbing stairs, bashing doors, or even cooking downstairs when I was in my bed upstairs. I invited friends who were not believing in ghosts several times in this house for a weekend, and some of them fled during the night when they heard it.

@PainsOnSlate Since I experienced it I am sure that ghosts are real. A ghost moving things around is a bit scary though, we would have had to find an agreement.

I've never encountered a ghost. I remember my brother and his former wife told us that they thought that a home that they were living in had a presence. She used to feel it quite often, and apparently the children saw it and the dog would react when it was around. I remember her telling us that if it was "mad" it would smell, and she'd have to tell it to go outside as it was smelling up the house and needed an attitude adjustment. And like magic, it would stop smelling.

fascinating is what I call that, I liked knowing there was a ghost or spirit in the house, I have lived in a lot of old homes and not one had a ghost/spirit...

That is so sweet though that the ghost seemed to watch over her children and when you said you were Joan's friend the ghost didn't bother you any more. I never would have been able to go back to that house though I would have been terrified!

I had heard about his antics for a long time and never felt anything until I was alone at night. He did thing like hiding Joan's kitchen scissors in a shoe in her closet, and hide many things in strange places, he made it sound like marbles were rolling in the attic...we really did think he was a child, he never bother any of Joan's kids.

@PainsOnSlate sounds like a very playful ghost like you say likely a child. Which is so sad when you think about it

@shaggin i agree...if it is a child you have to wonder why it stayed unless it didn't know what to do....and there were choices.

What a kool house. No, I've only heard about ghosts. Here some people claim they've seen 3 indians on horse back with spears when they're traveling towards the west on loop 375 near the top of the mountain and when they get to the turnabout to head back to where they saw them they're gone ...... but it's not documented.

Yeah, so do I @PainsOnSlate but if there are spirits of the natives on our mountain I'm sure they're not very happy about all the developing they've done to the slopes of their mountain.

I think the spirits of the natives are there and can be seen if they want to be...Love the thought of their spirits.

I guess I'm another that doesn't believe in ghosts, but I do believe in a spirit world. I have had encounters with that world I would not want to repeat. I now try to avoid any such encounters unless I know they are from God.

Yes, I have encountered a ghost. A morning I turned in my bed and saw my husband moving and stretching his arms, near me. I was going to say good morning, when I saw my husband by the door coming back from the bathroom. I jumped out of the bed and the other shape disappeared. I will never know who he was.

LOL! I've talked to ghosts before. We were living in a house that was owned by a friend of ours. He bought the house from an estate sale. The previous owner was killed in his driveway when a semi lost control and t-boned his car. We believe it was the previous owner who was the ghost. Anyway, the ghost liked to move things around in the house. He was particularly drawn to a glass rose I bought for Pretty. The glass rose was normally kept on top of our television set in the living room. Several times the ghost moved the rose onto the pellet stove beside the television. Once he moved it onto the kitchen table. Other times he turned it in different directions on top of the television set. Sometimes the ghost would take something and hide it. He always brought it back and put it where he took it from, but how long he kept it was always a puzzle. He might just hide it for a few minutes or sometimes he'd hide it for up to a week... I also heard a ghost come into my friend's house when I was staying with her a summer or two ago. I heard him open and close the front door, climb the stairs, open the door to the room I was sitting in and sit on the bed. I saw the bed dip where he sat. I saw the bed raise back up when he got off it and the covers flip back. I saw it dip again when he got in the bed and the covers pull up. I could see his shape under the covers. After a little bit, the covers went flat, like the ghost just disappeared.
