The Hometown Newspaper has sold

Eugene, Oregon

As of March 1, the Eugene Register-Guard newspaper will be taken over by Gatehouse Media, who owns (I think) about a hundred or more publications nationwide. Our local R-G was family owned for 91 years by the Baker family and is, overall, a really good local paper. I know that many people rarely read a newspaper anymore and it is most difficult to make one profitable. They are becoming extinct. I have read one (including comics, but not sports) almost every day since I was about ten years old. The staff at the paper is holding their collective breath to see how many jobs will be cut. I will wait and see if the price goes up (again like last year) and the quality of local news holds up. I wonder if newspapers elsewhere in the myLot world are selling and shrinking and disappearing? Even the LA Times sold last year.

There is a lot of competition now since the internet has newspapers online.

True, this one is online too. I may change my subscription to online only, would cost a lot less.

The newspaper world is not an easy one. It used to be almost every house on the street got a newspaper, now only my grandma gets it and that is because her fiance reads it when he comes over. We only get the newspaper when it is in the little bins at the gas station if something interesting is in it.

@JamesHxstatic We mostly do it for like if a band I really like is coming to town. Even had a band sign a page and they freaked out because they had no idea they were in the newspaper haha

Many of the small local papers have gradually sold out to one larger regional paper. When the local papers continue to be printed there is less and less local news in them. It is a great shame.

That is probably what will happen here, though we are the second biggest city in the state, so they might keep local news going I hope.

Bezos from amazon bought the Washington post. Hope they find a new formula to stay I'm business and keep the public informed. Some people still like to read Sundays paper with their morning cup of coffee.
