The Venta Rapid is a waterfall on the Venta River in Kuldiga, Latvia. It is the widest waterfall in Europe, spanning a width of 650 – 820 feet but its height is only about 6 feet.
It is a natural wonder and visitors can enjoy walking along the width of the falls. In the summer it is possible to bathe here. In the spring and autumn, spawning fish migrate upstream and it is possible to see flying fish attempt to jump over the rapid.
Around 300 years ago, the Duke of Courland invented a method to catch up to 100 salmon a day with baskets placed all along the falls. Due to this the neighboring town, Kuldiga grew as more and more fishermen took up residence. The town is a lovely place offering views of the waterfall and has many quaint buildings.
The best way to admire this site is from an impressive brick bridge that was built in 1874.
