Bargaining is a skill in Nigeria. People do not settle for the first price. Instead, they would rather bargain to see if they could get a discount. A bargaining session could go like this: Customer: How much? Seller: 1000 naira. Customer: I will pay 700 naira. Seller: No pay 950 naira. Customer: What about 780 naira? Seller: You can have it for 900 naira. Do you know how much I bought it? It would go on and on. Sometimes, the bargaining goes awry; customer and seller exchanging abusive words. This usually happens when the customer has negotiated a price that made the seller angry. Is it the same where you live? Do you buy at the first price or you bargain? picture credit: pixabay.com

No, it is not at all like this here in Switzerland, but I remember it was this way in several countries I visited, like Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey.

Those are African countries. Seems more bargaining is done in African countries, eh?

@LadyDuck What is the reason for the change, if I may ask? Do you know?

@mydanods Yes, I think it is still more in the habit of those populations. Back in time it was common also in some European countries, like Italy and Spain, no more now.

In the USA, we do not bargain for most things, except for expensive items like a car, house, or wholesale jewelry stores. We pay what the ticketed price states.

Only the elite do that over here. Even the rich sometimes take pride in bargaining. I wish I could visit USA one day. The culture differences would be a learning experience.

@mydanods My husband bargained for jewelry for me in the jewelry district in New York City. It's expected there. He also bargained for jewelry in Europe in regular jewelry stores. Otherwise, what you see is what you pay. I hope you can visit the USA one day, too. Do you see American movies or TV shows? You can get a small taste of what it's like here.

Sometimes it's good to just state your price and stick to it.

Over here, they would call you a snob. That's the fact. People expects a seller to leave the line open for bargaining. So, sellers leave a margin of profit in stating their prices because it would be bargained for.

@db20747 Well, it's a tradition here that everyone expects. If you just set a fair price and refuse to bargain, no one would buy. You would be chasing them away. They would say you are not interested in selling in the market.

@mydanods I would just be called a snob and explain that I set a fair price.
