1953 the best song of that year was “Hound Dog”. but the original versions not the one by Elvis. “Hound Dog” is a twelve-bar blues song that was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was originally recorded by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton on August 13, 1952 and sold more than 500,000 copies and wound up on the R&B charts for fourteen weeks. This recording is the one listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll” and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. The song has been recorded over 250 times and the best-known version remains the one recorded by Elvis Presley in 1956. Elvis’ version made it on the Rolling Stone magazine list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. With Elvis recording this song his version sold about 10 million copies all over the world. At one time it rose to number one on the U.S pop, country and R&B charts in 1956. Elvis’ recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1988.
