Able Bodiedism The Forgotten Prejudice

The physically disabled have always faced discrimination, as can be seen in 1960’s footage of John Lennon (added in the Youtube clip) to more recent incidents involving Donald Trump. Many employers will simply not hire disabled people, even when the company has plenty of jobs that will not be a problem for disabled staff. The Paralympic games have shown that for many disabled people, a lost limb, blindness, deafness, etc. are no obstruction to achievement. Able-Bodiedism is concerned with designing modern buildings even from architectural draftsmanship stages, with no regard for the disabled. We might not expect wheelchair ramps in a medieval castle, but a high tech office complex built in the 21st century without ramps, rails, disabled access toilets, etc. I inexcusable and unforgivable. Another area of Able-Bodiedism is the exploitation of the disabled for pity or self-promotion by able bodied figures eager to appear altruistic and caring, but merely being cynical. Shocking Yutube - John Lennon getting cheap laughs by crudely impersonating the disabled. Arthur Chappell
An old clip of a young John Lennon performing with The Beatles surfaced over the weekend where the star appears to be making fun of mentally and physically d...

What you say is right and so sad. I see many modern buildings without ramps and disabled access toilets. Even the supermarkets do not take into consideration people who need to use a wheelchair. The aisles are too narrow, the goods too high or too low and nobody around to help.

@LadyDuck it is appalling that this just keeps happening despite so much debate on the issues involved

We have quite stringent laws here regarding access and facilities for those with disabilities. Ramps are only allowed a certain grade. Even with our simple outdoor concerts if we want to have over 100 people we must have three toilets and one must be accessible for those with disabilities.

@JudyEv I don't know why they don't make all new toilets accessible to the disabled - there is no reason why able bodied people can't use disabled use toilets so if every toilet was suitable both able bodied and disabled people could access both - sending disabled people off to a seperate block is itself discriminatory

@arthurchappell I think Australia is pretty good in that regard. I've been in toilets in small towns and they're been user-friendly for all.

What's sad is that Trump voters found it funny when he mocked that disabled reporter during the first debate. It should have been over right then and there. Instead, they voted for him.

@teamfreak16 exactly, and most politicians here in the uk would be destroyed by such scandals as soon as such stories came out

This is very true but the best thing is that there are organizations fighting for their rights nowadays.

Oh my..terrible. I agree it is appalling that when it would take so little to make things accessible, instead the physically handicapped are so disposable in society still to this day..and we are supposedly civilized.
