Working with mentally handicapped kids is a challenge. Working with a regular staff out sick is awful, even though we got an experienced substitute. Our kids do not know how to do stuff out of their routine. They do not know social norms. We had screaming, tears, and meltdowns. Today is Thursday. I suspect at least one child is sick. Complained of an earache on the bus. Staff member is still sick. Different substitute today. Out the door I go to joust with evil knights, slay the dragons, and to teach Miss A. how to do her laundry. Hope you have a good day.

I spent years working with mentally and emotionally handicapped children. You have a tough job on your hands. Any change of any kind sends them right into a tailspin. Wish you luck with the dragon slaying.

This week has been full of dragons. You can really understand what goes on here. Friday and a different staff had to leave due to a sick child. Many people, even others in Special Ed. do not want to work with our kids or in our structured environment. The district is out of substitutes. Yikes!

@GardenGerty We used to have problems finding substitutes also. It's a hard job but can also be so rewarding.

How old is Miss A? I understand the crying and meltdowns over their change in routine as I go through that with my son.

Miss A. turned 11 in December. Has very few home skills or healthy habits. I had the privilege of coaching her how to take a shower for the largest portion of first semester. Combine bi polar, autism, depression and early puberty and it is a real stew of emotions. How is your son doing? Is his infection better? It was funny/ironic you talking about weird noises when he has drainage, as we have a little guy who has started that within the last month or so.

I was thinking you took care of a small child so was wondering about the teaching them to do laundry. Even at a younger age it's good for them to learn. At 11 that seems like a great life skill for then to learn. This school is wonderful you teach at. I wish our public school had more time to teach them things like this! My son is much better thankfully. Just a stuffy and runny nose. Very little cough left and no fever. That is ironic the kid there started making the noises I feel bad for you all its really awful to deal with. As soon as my son actually started being sick he stopped the noises it was just the two weeks before for some odd reason. I always know he's coming down with something when he starts doing it so bad.

That's hard. I used to do sub work when I was assisted seniors. Wow some of the senior folks got grouchy cause I was not their special person. I earned my keep!

You know, I have worked the entire gamut of humans. Pre school, pre pre school, elementary schools, adults who are mentally and physically disabled, senior adults in nursing homes, with and without dementia. Pretty much they are all the same. When things are good, they are a delight. Each new thing learned, each new connection made is a joy. And when things are off, heaven help us.

I can imagine it would be difficult with this flu season claiming so many people. I hope it went better today than expected.

We are all exhausted. We do end Friday afternoon with swimming, so they go into the weekend on a positive note.

I have always wondered whether you all can have sites specific for nature of services available as freelancers. Any unemployed person can take their qualifications to the police station, and get themselves recorded on the sites where their skills could be of use. The qualifications get locked by police station with password. The police also check whether the person is genuine and whether or not the person has a criminal record or other background check. The person can then inform on the site the day and time he or she can be available for relevant services. Effectively, there is scope for getting the required personnel in time.

Had a long weekend Feb. 5. I spent the extra day doing appointments. Spring break is in March. Maybe we get an extra day off March 5, I have to check my calendar.

It is hard, but it touches my heart. It makes me think. I love seeing them learn new things. The student must have been feeling pressure changes in the atmosphere, as he did not miss any school. We have all had coughs and cold symptoms ever since November.

It is difficult for routines to change for everyone, especially those poor children. Happy birthday to you today!

Not sure where my birthday is listed as February. I maybe did some sleep posting?!. Please let me know where it says today is my birthday, so I can correct it? I was born in August.

My supervisor and I were talking this morning about how tiring this week has been. Add to it weather that switches back and forth from spring to winter, and a fire drill on one of the spring like days, plus early dismissal so the buses could run before the forensic tournament at the high school. In our classroom our heads are spinning.

@GardenGerty No wonder the kids are being a bit problematic.
