When I was in the university we used to carry out demonstrations and protests a lot. It seems we protested against everything. When the food was not good, there was somebody protesting. If the utility companies takes away power, there will be a protest. If the VC starts a program the students don't like, they will bring out their placards.
Some of the protests are peaceful but a majority are violent. Students will impound cars and burn them. They even attacked the residence of the VC at one time.
Wondering if anyone has participated in a violent protest?

No. I think it is stupid to be violent. It costs the nation, and consequently government is left with no monies to create jobs. Better would be to completely surround the VC's house. Do not let anybody in, do not let anybody out. No water, no food, no power supply, the guy will bend down faster.

I don't remember protesting during my time as a student, despite this being during the early 1970s when there were plenty of protests on UK university campuses.
However, at present we have placards and protests a-plenty in the UK - but it is the lecturers and professors who are doing the protesting! This is over proposed changes to their pension scheme, which will leave many of them with a much smaller pension than they were hoping for. Their anger is being fuelled by the fact that the top brass in many universities are paying themselves huge salaries and they have their own pension arrangements.
