One in three West Australian freeway drivers caught using mobile phones

There has been a lot written about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. Recently, over a 9 ½ hour period, special cameras were used on a Perth, Western Australia, freeway.
Of the 33,428 vehicles monitored, 1 driver in every 30 was attached to their phones. Nearly 45% showed drivers in active use of their phones, either holding it or touching it in the cradle. The area tested was a 100kmh known danger area and merging hotspot.
Authorities believe offenders don’t believe they can be caught when driving at such speeds but hopefully, with technology improving all the time, these offenders will soon be facing much harsher penalties for putting their own, and others’, lives at risk.
You can read the full article here:
The photo is of my husband's first car.
NEARLY two drivers every minute were caught red-handed using their mobile phones during a survey of a dangerous stretch of a Perth freeway using high-tech specialised cameras.

I'm thinking that it would probably be worse here. People are not so smart.

It worked out to one person every 33 seconds. That is just SOOO bad. I think it would be bad just about anywhere although they have really severe penalties in Switzerland apparently - loss of licence then a test and $3,000 to retake your licence. Something like that anyway. Perhaps @LadyDuck will tune in if I've got it wrong.

It's hard to spot the cellular phone in your husband's hand!
Back to the subject of your post. If only people could act more responsibly?

One day last week the young woman driving the car behind me, on my commute to work, was quite clearly using her phone AND eating her breakfast while driving. This wasn't just a one off either! How do I know this? The following day she was behind me again doing exactly the same thing!!

Don't you wish you could get your car to fart rotten eggs all over her windscreen? I bet you were sweating a bit. The trouble is when she has an accident it may not be her who gets hurt. Not that you want her hurt but you know what I mean.

Using a mobile phone while driving is hazardous to one's health and those around you. I've had to pull over to use my phone when someone called me, which is rare. Usually my cell phone doesn't ring. People who are on their phones while driving deserve a fine.

I already made a discussion about it and we talked a lot there about this issue!
What attracted me to this discussion is your husband's first car...I too had a car lloking similar to it as my first car...that was Morris 8, which I have gifted to ex sheriff of Bombay then (Mumbai) few decades back as he was too much interested in that Vehicle!

@JudyEv Drivers should understand how dangerous is to be distracted, even for a few seconds. My niece had an accident last year in Italy, she was looking at her phone and crashed into the car in front of her. Now she does not use her phone anymore while she drives.

Phone manufacturers should create devices that turn off or become disabled when a person is driving. I don't know, maybe they can use GPS tracking to know when someone is in motion in a vehicle, causing the phone to disable until such time as movement stops.

@JudyEv Tesla Motor Company is getting into the commercial truck business, and is developing an all-electric semi-truck. They have been talking with several big trucking firms, who stated that they would be interested in buying the trucks if Tesla could guarantee a charging station about every six hours on the highway. That is about how long truckers can drive before they are required to stop and rest. While they are resting, their truck could be re-charging. A great concept if they can make it work.

Love that cute old car! Cell phones, texting, etc. are wreaking havoc on the highways. So dangerous.

It's really bad here. I will admit that I used to do it, but I don't anymore.

@JudyEv - Unless I need to know what time it is, I don't even touch mine while I'm driving.
