Charity Shops/Thrift Stores

I was about to write about charity stores when I realised they are not called that in other countries. In the US I believe they are called Thrift stores, places where second hand goods are sold.
When my kids were little I didn't have a lot of money so their clothes often came from charity shops. I can honestly say they were always clean and tidy and I would only buy clothes, books or toys that were in good condition.
As time went on I didn't need to buy second hand but I still enjoy browsing a charity shop and picking up a bargain. If I get something at a fraction of the price it originally cost I always seem to value it more.
Do you ever buy second hand or do you always buy new?

@LadyDuck My mum used to make dresses for my sister and myself. She had an old Singer sewing machine. We have photos of us wearing those dresses. We weren't twins but she always made us the same when we were little.

@LadyDuck My son had a Manchester United football shirt when he was around 13 which would have cost a fortune new ,.. he never knew it was second hand or he probably wouldn't have worn it but he loved it. After he grew out of it my daughter wore it to bed with a pair of shorts

The important is that your son love it. My mother was a dressmaker when she was young. She loved to make my dresses when I was young and also the shirts for my younger brother.

As a matter of fact I worked in what we call Thrift Shops. We carried new and 2nd hand things. I loved it very much and we have a good community until we had to close down. It was a shame. I believe in them very much. I got things there that I could not find somewhere else here.

@Hannihar We have lots in our country. Usually they are run by volunteers.

@sol_cee Some people probably never needed to buy second hand and always prefer new. Even though I can afford new now I still like to hunt for a bargain.

@Lignitecityabishek96 I can understand that although some stuff is in good condition. I wouldn't buy electrical stuff second hand.

@Icydoll I have bought some lovely furniture second hand. It's probably saved me hundreds of pounds.

@Icydoll Yes if it's in good condition people can't tell it's been used before.

I usually buy second hand. But charity stores don't work well here. They mostly sell very bad quality and very old stuff.

@anikoonline It used to be a bit like that here. The shops were always very smelly with poor quality clothes. It's much better here now.

@anikoonline I think they use air fresheners in ours now as they smell quite nice.

@mydanods It's really interesting to hear all the different names people call their second hand stores, In Australia they call them Op Shops.
