Coin Intrigue

My brother decided out of the clear blue to send me 3 coins. One is a $1 Gold George Washington 2007 (supposedly worth $21.10 according to Google); another is a $1 Liberty 1 oz silver 2002 (last one ever made and worth $199 according to Google) and the last one is a $5 Elizabeth II 1 oz silver 1989 (supposedly worth $202.99 according to Google. Well my first thought was "cha-ching" ($$$$$$). So in my small town, there are no coin dealers so I had to check surrounding cities (45 miles and further away) and guess what they want to give me?........$16 for the whole batch. Are you kidding? That ain't even worth the gas to get there. Of course silver is only going for $16.62 per ounce today, but you can bet those dealers would turn around and sell those to collectors for a heck of a lot more. I guess I'll just pass those coins down to my great-great-great-great grandchildren.

I'd hold onto them and not sell them. The dealer was trying to rip you off.

Yeah, he was strictly going by the price of an ounce of silver and not the value of the coin itself @just4him .

This is always the problem with coins, you never get the price they are sold. I have found silverware in the house of my mom. I asked around, almost nobody want silver, you still get good money selling gold. I think I am going to sell the golden coins.

@nanette64 I see no reason to keep things that I do not use. I am going to sell also most of my jewels, I never wear them.

I would hold on to them for awhile longer. They are dealers who want to make a tidy profit so they would never give you what it is worth

Can't you sell them on Ebay or somewhere similar? There must be private collectors who would be prepared to pay something near their true value.

I'm not sure how to do the Ebay thing @JudyEv . I'm afraid of getting scammed or ripped off.

@nanette64 Fair enough but at least don't sell them cheaply.

the most a dealer will give you is no more than about 60%. they still need to make a profit when they resell it. youre better of selling to a collector who will more than likely pay full price or very close to it.

They really would be taking advantage of you and others. They should be ashamed.
