Last week my eyes, especially the left one was quite red with a sticky, yellow discharge in the corner of the eye. I tried to make an appointment with my ophthalmologist but the nearest is schedule for next tuesday, 20. Meanwhile I decide to buy some medicine (I know we shouldn't do this) by myself, in the pharmacy they told me It was a conjunctivitis and gave me "Clorocil" an antibiotic eye drops. After applying It during three days may eyes were fine again.
But this monday It start all again
. I read It could be a virus, a bactheria or just allergic, I think mine is a bacterial conjunctivitis due to my symptons. Now I am getting better again as I am applying Clorocil again but these time I will keep putting the drops after my eyes are good again at least for more two days.
I am a librarian and I work with very old books and I think It is due to this, as It started again on monday at the work as I was working with books from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Have you ever had this? What else Can I do?

I had a bacterial conjunctivitis, be careful is contagious, wash your hands every time you apply the eye drops, call your ophthalmologist and let him know you think it is a bacterial conjunctivitis. You had to continue to apply Clorocil for some more days, even if the eye looked fine.

I can't remember the last time I had that but there is a season here when most people get that and it's viral. I couldn't remember what medicine I applied on my eyes at all.
Is there really no way you could go to an emergency room of the hospital and get prescription? It's easy to get a prescription here and not that difficult to schedule an appointment with an EENT. Try and EENT instead of an ophthalmologist.

You probably stopped using the drops too early. When my children were young you couldn't get over the counter medication you had to go to the doctors and they gave us this sticky ointment which blurred the vision. Thankfully I never got it.

@nela13 I had a stye once an that was really painful. I remember waking up one morning and couldn't open my eye as it had burst and the top lid was stuck to the bottom.

I would keep using the drops for at least 2-3 days after all your symptoms clear up.
I hope your eyes get better soon!

@nela13 How are your eyes feeling today? Are they getting better?
I think you have an amazing job, working with such old books at the library. You must see a lot of wonderful old books!

@moffittjc I am much better today, thank you
Is not that good because some books are really bad treated by the years and all the dust and little insects inside them aren't funny at all. even though it is true that sometimes I work with amazing ones.

i think you should always have eye drops so the inflammation won't recur.

It could be allergies but it also could be that whoever is returning the books you are touching has pink eye and you are catching it. Do not touch your eyes at all if they have not been washed immediately before. That is great the pharmacy gave you medicine that helped but I agree taking it for a few days after it clears up is a good idea. I think things like that should be used 7-10 days but I don't recall for sure. I don't go to the eye doctor for things like that though just my family doctor.

It must have been horrible I hope you are just taking your medication and make sure you got yourself a regular check up with doctors. Recently I'm just having gout, but it's not worst than before.

Sorry Manuela but I actually don't have any idea about what can be done in your case but it would be better to consult a doctor before testing anything on your eyes. And if its returning then you should be wearing something on your eyes for protection.

i've never had it, but as far as i know, just like when you or someone else has a cough or cold, it's better to always wash your hands and keep them away from your face.
since it's your eyes, maybe change pillowcases, towels, etc regularly, too, (fabrics that touch the face) until it completely clears up.
