Fermented foods

Have you ever made, or do you use, fermented foods? Fermentation was used as a means of preserving foods long before refrigeration was available, and fermented foods are incredibly healthy, providing the healthy bugs we all need in our tummies. They include things like yoghurt, kefir, kombucha, and various fermented vegetables and condiments. I used to make my own yoghurt all the time, it is very easy to do, but recently I have found a good commercial brand that I love. Kefir is a fermented milk (there is also a water version) and kombucha is a fermented tea. At various times I have made both of these. I have also made fermented pickling onions and fermented dill pickles, both of which were much tastier than the shop bought versions, and recently I made a very yummy fermented beetroot and apple relish. If you would like to know more about fermenting, this web site has some great free ebooks that you can get by signing up for their newsletter (they don't bombard you with rubbish)

Though it's not our country's food, I love kimchi. It's fermented.

@lynnief You should, or you can buy one from a Korean supermarket. I heard you have those in Australia as there a lot of Koreans there too.

@toniganzon I'm sure there are Korean or Asian supermarkets in the big cities, but unfortunately not out here in the country.

My girlfriend makes her own yogurt, and also drinks a lot of kombucha. She has Crohn's disease, so that helps her digestive system a great deal.

That interesting. I've never heard about most of these products particularly the fermented ones.
