Hello friends, Hope all of you are doing good. I have been visiting one of the nationalized banks for closing the bank account since Saturday and finally I successfully closed the same today. Actually it was a joint account under the name of me and my husband. We have been operating that account since 2000. The branch of bank located near my hubby’s office. He changed the job and it has been long time the account was inoperative. The subsidy of booking gas cylinder was deposited with this account so we did not take any steps to close the same. Last week only we came to know that banks are deducting money every month for not maintaining the minimum balance. The new rules are implemented after the demonetization the amount of minimum balance also increased. So the staff suggested closing the account. I have observed one thing from my three days visit in the bank, many people are giving letter for closing the account. Have you closed any bank account recently? Is there any changes of rules in the banking sector recently?

I had two accounts in the same bank and I closed one last year for a similar reason : I was paying only 1 monthly fee and they started to put monthly fees on both accounts.

I think different accounts must pay the monthly fees if any. In our place, they deduct money in the name of different services, like SMS charges, not maintaining the required balance, debit card charges etc.

@topffer Luckily we don't have any fees here. Instead they charges according to their wishes in the name of multiple kind of charges.

@Sreekala You can discuss about any fee here, if your account is interesting for the bank, they will remove the fee. I was not needing one of these accounts anymore since years, so the best to do was to close it.

Yes, it was with SBT actually now they merged with SBI. The service was good with SBT (according to other people who came for closing their account).

@Sreekala Funny, Rajan came up with no minimum balance accounts and higher interest rates for savings banks, while banks have taken revenge by collecting higher charges.

Opening accounts with Post Office is beneficial than banks as they never charges anything for low balance, no extra charges for using ATM multiple times. But I think all Post offices are not explored the facilities.

I closed a couple. The reason was distance. Yes, when we change our homes, we have no choice and there are invariably some payments into the account that force us to keep those accounts alive. Three to be precise. One we were operating from even before 2000. Ironically, after we closed that one, its branch came next to our home. LOL

Here also the reason for closing is the distance. Earlier hubby worked in the nearby building so it was easy for us. Since he changed his job the account become inoperative and we had no idea what was going with the bank account especially after SBT merged with SBI. No communication from them too. Finally on visiting the branch by taking a day leave could find out the massive cutting of money due to the absence of minimum required balance (Rupees three thousand). Actually the gas subsidy is coming to this bank every month so they got money for cutting enough.

@Sreekala Accounts were opened because of proximity to office or home. We had what 11 accounts or so!!! I forgot, I closed 4. Some more to go. Two of them will go down in 2020.

Is it a Nationalised bank or a Private Bank. Most Private banks are creating problems in the guise of demonetization.

It is a popular nationalized bank. Now private banks are more friendly and doing many things to attract customers.

It was only due to the recent change made in banks. Banks which were running on loss have the permission to take the money of account holders. For this they will be provided with shares of equivalent amount. So many of them fearing on this so they were closing their accounts.

They can't take money without any reason. In our case they told for not maintaining the minimum balance which is Rs. 3000 (approximately $50).

I have recently closed my salary account in HDFC bank. I just had to fill a form. That's all. They closed the account instantly handing over the balance to me.

They are private banks and they are quick of their services. The government staffs are their own egos mostly. Very sad but true. Even visiting the third day on Monday the person told me, it is not easy to close the account, many staffs are involved in the process. I kept quiet as I am closing their services.
