It Comes and Goes

Yesterday I had hardly any pain at all in my ankle. Today, I've been in constant pain, despite taking my prescribed pain meds regularly. It has rained a bit today, so perhaps the weather is causing my pain. It's strange how it comes and goes.
At night it is usually worse. For some reason when I try to sleep, the muscles in my feet spasm and jerk around, which causes me excruciating pain in my ankle. I have never broken my ankle, foot, or leg before, so I don't know if this is normal or if my foot is just being weird.
In better news, I am finally able to shower. My mom surprised me by ordering me a shower bench, which goes over the edge of the tub and you sit on the outer edge and scoot yourself into the tub. She also got me a portable handheld shower, the type you use on a camping trip. It has a rechargeable pump that you stick in a bucket of water, and it pumps the water through the handheld showerhead. It is so nice to be clean again. Sponge baths and the occasional shampooing my hair in the kitchen sink just don't quite cut it.
On Tuesday morning I will see the orthopedist again, and he will remove my current cast (which has a cut down one side to allow for swelling) and replace it with a cast that won't have a cut in it. I'm looking at about 6 weeks in a cast, then possibly 2 weeks of physical therapy. I will probably have to have help learning to use that foot again once the cast comes off for good. I dread Tuesday morning and going up and down the stairs again. I have been trying not to think about it, but it is hanging over my head like a dark cloud. At least my boyfriend took the morning off from work to help me with the stairs and to get me to my appointment. I just hope he doesn't end up hurting himself while trying to help me scoot my fat butt up the steps.

I hope you become better soon. I once had a cast on my left foot. It is a real challenge for me to go to school, luckily my school have elevators, but the big problem is commuting going to school and back to our house. Anyway I am glad that is all over. I really feel the pain in my ankle at that time, what I hate most is the sudden jolt. I really pray you get better now.

Thank you. I'm sorry you experienced that. I am thankful I don't have to leave my home too often (so far I have only left once since this happened, and that was to go to the orthopedist to get the cast.) I don't know how kids manage getting around on crutches when they have to go to school and engage in regular activities. I get wore out just going down the hall in my apartment.

@Srbageldog I don't remember muscle spasms, but then again I was on muscle relaxers for my back. So that might have preempted any spasms in my feet.
I remember being shocked that I was healed. I wondered how one could have pain like that and be okay. But much to my shock, this doctor knew what he was doing!

That's good to know. Thank you for sharing that with me. Did your muscles ever seem to jerk around in your feet that you can recall? I'm not sure if it's just something I'm unconsciously doing or if it's doing it on its own. I called a nurse's hotline and asked about muscle spasms and was told those were to be expected.

I sure hope it heals, fast and right. That would irritate me to try to go to sleep and then have that happen. Are you going to tell the doc about it to see if it is normal? I'm going to catch up more with you tomorrow. Tess just went to sleep and seeing she is coughing and stuff, maybe I can get a little sleep before she wakes up again. Hope you are doing good other then the foot.

@Srbageldog You do know you aren't suppose to hit it off things right, it wont come off that way.
So just 2 more weeks, bet that feels like forever. After that what is the plan?

@Srbageldog I hope that it heals good for you and that you don't have to do a lot of therapy. That is what I'm afraid of that they will take forever to reschedule for you. I sure hope they don't.

@Ithink Haha!
Once the cast comes off in two weeks, I will need to do range of motion exercises at home to help me walk properly again...or I may need a couple weeks of physical therapy. I said I would try to do the exercises at home, but the orthopedist put in a referral for physical therapy just in case! After that, I'm clear to have surgery...if they ever reschedule it!

if the legs are on the outside of the tub-put an empty bowl under each.
it often drips down it.

So sorry you went from no pain one day to too much pain yesterday! No idea how medicine doesn't help with things they're supposed to.
So glad you're able to shower now! Ugh sponge baths must have stunk!

Yeah, it's really weird! Today I'm not in as much pain...it has to be the weather, or maybe something to do with my muscles spasming/jerking when I'm trying to sleep. I'm always in more pain after my foot has been doing that all night. I don't get how medicine doesn't always help either. I should be to the point where I don't need pain meds, but once they wear off I can feel it!
Yes, sponge baths stunk -- in more ways than one!
I'm so glad I can at least shower again. It's weird how you take things for granted!
