Old School: “Ma’am, May I Go Out?”

I am pretty sure some of you could still remember this simple question. It is intended to ask permission from a teacher. One reason, a student wants to use a toilet. However, some teachers are quite strict in imposing classroom rule. He or she discouraged this. For the reason that it can disturb the on-going class. That’s too bad if the students have such teachers. They need to endure not to use a toilet. “Do you ask permission when going out from the classroom?” “Any experience like this?” Image Credit: pixabay.com

We all had to wait for our teacher's permission to go outside. I have bunked many classes in my school days. Now, when I grew up, I thought those strict teachers are indeed the best ones as they don't allow the groups to go outside the class together. Otherwise, their studies would have been hampered.

I do think that teachers need to be strict. It is their way to make the students responsible and make the class in order.

@Shavkat , Yes, then there was dedication in the teachers which of which they used to command respect from the students...today I think that is lacking...at least in my country India! Thanks!

I do agree with you. It is quite lax during the elementary days. During my high school days, the teachers were quite so strict that I can't even raise my hands.

of course, kabsat. and we usually raise our hand with the other palm resting our upright arm, forming an L. i hope you imagine what i am talking about. during recitation too, we do this arm/hand movement, moving closer to the teacher and showing our raised arm in front of her face. "Ma'am, Ma'am, Ma'am!" hahaha! i vividly recall that.

In our time, they do not allow to go out from the class unless it is very urgent. There is break time in between classes for children for using washrooms. So I can't remember for taking any permission like that.

It seems that your school had carried a standard practice in the classroom. It wasn't that strict in primary and secondary level as compared in the university level.

We used to wave our hand in the air and say 'may I leave the room please'. That was our standard way of asking to go to the toilet.

@Shavkat By University students should be able to plan going to toilet so it doesn't interfere with their lectures.

Sure, we always had to ask permission. When I went to high school I could attend some lessons in a different school. At first it was very strange when a student stood up and went out of the classroom without saying a word. It was normal there to go to the toilet without permission.

During my university days, some teachers allow the students not to ask permission. Since the class is on going and no need to create a scene.
