Well, it's April 9th 17 years ago today I legally changed my last name to Christensen. By doing this I claimed a piece of my Danish heritage, and rejected a patriarchial naming tradition which originated in a time when women were considered chattel. For me April 9th is Independence Day! I have a last name from my mother's side of the family, and I was born in my father's homeland. I'm all about the balance. I'm also lucky enough to have a husband who had no interest in playing "pin the name on the wife." :) When we got engaged I told him flat out i ws NOT going to take his name, and he CHEERED. He actually offered to take mine. As flattering as that was, why expect someone to do something I'd never dream of doing? For us it's the "&" that joins us together, not having a common last name.

You should have he right to keep your last name and have a say in it. I have both of my parents’ last names. And when I got married I kept it. It didn’t hurt that the law kind of says that I do keep it. Either way my husband is fully supportive of me keeping my last name.

I didn't change my name when I was married: I didn't want to lose my identity.
