Is there an etiquette to texts and e-mails? How long is a reasonable amount of time for someone to respond to your texts and e-mails? Do you have any special rules or exceptions on your response time? photo- healthitoutcomes.com/google images

@dgobucks226 - the last one is a different situation. Your post was about text and email, not life in general. Text and emails are responded to as to how deems their importance, tnere shouldnt be a set rule, unless you like to set rules for your life in every aspect of it.

@Plethos With social media today text and emails and voice messages for that matter are part of everyday life now as I see it. So, it seems your "rule" is to respond to these types of social media based on the importance of the situation, which I totally agree is perfectly reasonable. From your responses it seems you are against rules. That's perfectly ok, but one cannot deny others the right to set and obey them just because you disagree. Putting this discussion into perspective society definitely overdoes rules and regulations to the point that some are idiotic. Maybe a middle ground is needed. As I've heard it said: less is more....

So we can break them? Personally, I think rules provide structure in life. Didn't we have rules when we were in school? Did not one suffer consequences for breaking them. Don't we have rules on the job? Don't we risk getting fired if we break them? You can't eliminate them. Do they have to apply to everything in life... of course not. In the case of texting or messages, if someone in my family texted me to say my father is in the hospital, wouldn't an immediate response be a good idea?

There can't be any specific rule regarding it. Everyone gets busy at a certain time. For private life you can apply this rule. It's not applicable to public life. I don't have any exception for it.

For emergency situations involving your family member? Would you apply the same approach?

@dgobucks226 Since I am not always on my phone I do not see when someone writes me a text. I will answer when I see it. I do not like to text on my phone. I make so many mistakes and am very slow. E-mails if I need to ask someone something I do not respond right away to them.

Hm, that's a good question all in itself.... if there is some time sensitive information then I like to have a reply quicker. Otherwise if it's just conversational, no real time limit

What if someone left you a message on your cell phone about a loved one being injured. When would you respond? Would you have a special rule in that instance?

What is that? Do you have a certain response time or go with the flow?

It depends on who it is sent to. I expect my lids to respond within the hour but if it is business related - 24 hours would be fine.

I'll be interested in the answers as I don't know. I don't have a mobile so that part of it never bothers me. Other emails I usually answer promptly.

If it is a personal email or text I suppose they get back to me when they can...if they do it all. If it is a business text or email I expect a response as quickly as possible. Especially if it happens to be a vendor I am dealing with that I need a quote for to quote my customer on.
