The Proposal

Three weeks after our meeting, he returned to his country of residence - thousands of miles away. We spoke on the phone every day - and three months later the proposal came - by phone. Do you remember the day your husband or wife proposed? Was it expected or unexpected ?- a simple affair, or specially planned ?. I would have much preferred a proposal like the one shown in the above picture. I know partners have been dumped via text message, but I wonder if there was ever a proposal by text. Would you appreciate a text message marriage proposal?

I thought would be husbands propose, and they kneel or used to kneel till they realized the place they knelt must have been exactly the spot where some cat chose to poop a few centuries ago.

kneeling is one traditional method. Women do propose too - though that is certainly not traditional.

We went together for quite a while then split up for a year or two. When my future husband decided he did want to be with me after all I was quite enjoying the single life and he had to do some persuading.

@Kandae11 I always say he won me over when he bought me a pineapple fritter at a drive-in.
With so many posts about food recently and mention of pineapple in a discussion (sorry, I can't remember whose post it was) I was reminded of the...

Most times it is best to take some time before making a decision - and it worked in your case.

My husband proposed during a dinner, something very similar to this photo. We had no cell phones in those times, we were happy people.

I like creative. We were on a back mountain road, just talking, and he suddenly asked me to marry him. I said yes, then the next day I told him no. It was a few more days before he convinced me.

If the proposal is unexpected , some time should be allowed to consider carefully before making a decision. At least he was able to convince you eventually .

I had a very traditional proposal on bended knee, after he asked my father's permission. That's the only way to propose in my book. My sons did likewise.

@Kandae11 Yes, mine was in private. My older son did a public proposal in a swanky lounge after a fancy dinner. She screeched like a chicken! lol. Our younger son did a private proposal.

@DianneN Public proposals mean that the one proposing is very confident of the answer.

Mine was expected since I had lots to give back then and he had to grab me fast before the prey got lost to someone else. Any text message is considered as a joke to me. (There are text messages which I only found out a few weeks later. I have a few different cell phones. To the people I don't care for, I would give them a certain number so that I could mute the phone and ignore it. )

i would not be impressed by a text message either - a phone call is not the best, but better than a text. You've given me an idea there - get a different cell phone for certain callers.

I am into traditional type. I mean I still like to hear it straight from my his mouth. We just had a simple date and then we bought rings and asked me to marry him and then now he is my husband.

Personally, I am Glad mine never came via Text message as Cell phones and Texting was not out yet. Ours was nothing spectacular either, but Romantic. He asked me even though we had been discussing the thought of marriage and then asked everyone what they thought from there

I think face to face would be nicer but it's quite amusing and cute to be asked by text message or phone too. It's almost like they can't wait to ask, perhaps.

In the text it might be more understandable if he says something like - "I think we should get married , let's discuss it later at dinner".
