Diary 4th To 7th April 2018

Diary Wednesday 4th April 2018 The day after my return from the Harrogate science fiction convention, I had to start my mandatory CCTV training course. This began with a three hour maths and English exam paper, the second one associated with the course. It was quite gruelling, and I expect to fail the maths though I won't know for weeks. I did some shopping once I got free again. Diary Thursday 5th April 2018 The course started properly now, running for two nine hour days and then a seven hour day. I had to be up at 6.30 am each day to attend, though the first day the tutor waited an hour for latecomers making me wish I'd gone late too. Much of the course was watching quite grim genuine CCTV footage of acts of violence, in some cases fatal. One girl struggled to cope at all. We had to identify what was going in and fill in witness statements as if we were presenting evidence in courts. It was actually interesting to do. Our tutor and the other students were fun to work with but it was hard work. Diary Friday 6th April 2018 The morning was much as yesterday but we had to do two long multiple choice written exams in the afternoon Our tutor was not allowed to be present to help us, but compared to the maths tests it felt easy. Diary Saturday 7th April 2018 The final day of the course involved actually using CCTV cameras, learning to point the lens, turn it 360 degrees, read car registration plates on the outside car park through it etc. We got to go home a few hours early. I also learned that while if I pass the course I will get a certificate in a few weeks if I want to use it to get a CCTV operator license I would have to pay £220.00 for it, so the whole course was a massive waste of my time. I hate when I do my best not to be late and then I have to wait for those who show up late. I imagine the footage you watched to present evidence was interesting. I hope you enjoyed this course, it sounds interesting.

@LadyDuck it was interesting but often very violent with incidents of knife crime - one great observation test we did that wasn't violent was this - and it is easy to miss the biggest clue here http//

@LadyDuck yes, I think concentrating on the ball count blinds us to the gorilla - it is plain to see on playback if we just watch for the gorilla

@arthurchappell I cannot stand violent crimes, seeing blood makes me sick. I am watching the video and it's interesting. I guessed right the 15 passes, I missed the gorilla.

@celticeagle I actually find the song quite serious though satirical. It shows a sense of paranoia at being under an intense all pervasive surveillance culture

Back down to earth with a bump. Are there no loans or grants for the £220?

@asfarasiknow no grants and my debts make getting loans nigh on impossible

Nice of them to tell you about the cost at the end of the training - NOT!

@JudyEv yes, they wanted to make sure they got enough students to get their funding - telling us it was all for nothing would have been more incentive not to go, at least for those few who had a choice

It is a pity it was mandatory and something you are really interested in. Not much rest or settling in after you got back from the convention.

But if it's something you could see yourself doing - and there was a position available - it wouldn't be a waste of your time, nor a waste of any monies you would spend on getting the actual licence. :)
