There are many types of kites. There is the traditional, stunt kites, tubes, ones with themes and character, and single line ones. Range in size with both large and small. Prices can range from just a few dollars to several hundred. Your imagination is the only limit.
One kite viewed is said to be one of the most expensive and is made in the shape of a fish. All material is currency notes.
Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is a relatively new sport where a person actually rides the kite. There are also stunt kite competitions worldwide.
There is a story about a kite that was made in 1773 and then buried for hundreds of years in a Dutch attack. Listen to the story here:

Kites have come a long way from when I flew them. I remember when a box kite came out and it was a big deal. Today kite type sail is even used for surfing.

My older brother and I used to make kites out of old newspapers. Those were the good ol' days.
