No One Knows Me Better Than Me!!!!

Three times yesterday some schmuck argued with me when I told them I was legally blind. They say I do too dang well to be that way. I do well because I’ve learned how to adapt!!! My husband and step-Dad are going blind, and will eventually be blonder than i’ll Ever be, and I’m still teaching them. :)
I channeled my annoyance, and decided to do something productive. Here’s my open letter to the world.
Dear Planet Earth!
The next person who doesn’t believe me when I say I’m legally blind, is going to get my cane stuck where the sun never shines. I read my phone by holding it close to my face. I take still pictures by putting the object of my focus in the centre of the viewer, and clicking. This actually allows me to photograph something, and enlarge it so I can see it more clearly, sometimes....like if I want to photograph a street sign at a distance.
I have no use for GIF’s from movies....even if I’ve seen the movie. I’ve seen Airplane 761 times, but I still won’t be able to associate a GIF with a quote. However, lines like “take that finger out of your ear. You don’t know where that finger has been” and “don’t call me Shirley” are instantly recognizable when heard or read.
Finally, enough with “but you do so well!!!!!!!” Of course I do. 36 years of practice!!!! Frankly, I have NO IDEA how anyone hears or plays music, without perfect pitch, but obviously they do. It’s beyond me how someone doesn’t hear “B flat” when the toilet flushes, or an F major third, when they get a dial tone.
When someone tells you they have a challenge, don’t second guess them.
A friend told me she once heard it said that she doesn’t look autistic. What on earth does THAT mean?

Thanks. It amazes my husband how I can reach for something in any direction without having to look or change position. Sometimes the best way to gain a sense is to lose a part of one.

i agree. no one knows us better than we ourselves. it is good you are able to live 'normally' despite your being legally blind.

Oh, I do t know about “normally.” What is “normal?” LOL The way I see it, I have the same goals as anyone else, and I’m willing to do what I need to do to achieve them.

Some just do not understand that we have two choices....succumb to our challenges...or rise above them.
It might be nice to moan and complain about our situation, but getting up and accomplishing things that are virtually impossible increase our ability to perform through adversity.
Yesterday I read about a young man...severely disabled whe whisked it were possible to join his friends backpacking across Europe. Amazingly, his friends pulled together and made it happen. He was carried, in the backpack for three weeks.

That’s wonderful! We are only as “disabled” as we allow ourselves to be.
