WHAT MAKES A BULLY? REASON 1 Notorious, child murderer and molester, Westley Allen Dodd, was convicted and executed in the 1990’s. As with all violent criminals, professionals seek for answers that would explain such depraved behavior. In the search to explain how a calm, mild-mannered boy like Westley Dodd could become so indifferent and violent, reporter Thom Spencer uncovers that Dodd, in his childhood, was repeatedly bullied. In Spencer’s blog, JaredStory.com, he relates that Dodd’s classmates recalled numerous instances of extreme bullying involving Westley Dodd as the victim. Spencer believes this led to a warped way of thinking for Dodd which was in retaliation to his tormentors. Reason 1: The bully was once a victim of bullying. Aggressive tendencies develop in children who are treated aggressively. The younger the child at the time of being bullied, the more likely they will become a bully. They learn that aggression is the way to get what one wants. Also the degradation and helplessness felt by the victim will push them the other direction. Since they can not stop their tormentor, they will begin to bully others to gain a sense of power. It is for this reason that the issue of bullying must be addressed. The cycle must stop and that only happens when others step up to fight for the victim.
