Things must change. I have focused on some bona fide classics so far in my Play it Again, Sam music series, a daily two part discussion, an original song followed by a cover of that song. We've focused on songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan thus far, but these next guys are heavyweights in their own right. #43a is "The Sun and the Rainfall" by Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode is an alternative music giant, have been since they formed in 1980. That's 38 years that they've been at this. They've never released a bad album, they have a legion of dedicated fans, and synth pop and darkwave bands fall all over each other citing them as a major influence. That's a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame worthy career. "The Sun and the Rainfall" is the final track on their 1982 album, A Broken Frame. The entire album was written by Martin Gore, following the departure of bandleader and chief songwriter Vince Clarke. The tune was a sign of things to come for the band. It showed Gore's potential as a songwriter: it's a great song, and he would only get better. And while it had some of the quirky synth pop of early Depeche Mode, it also hints at the darker sound that the band would eventually morph into. "The Sun and the Rainfall" was not released as a single, so odds are that if you haven't listened to the album, you haven't heard it. It turns out, however, that it was perfect for one band to cover. Stay tuned. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Depeche Mode were one of those bands that were okay, but I never added to my collection.

Quality Depeche Mode, even if it wasn't a single!
