Psalm 4:1
Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have given me relief when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!
SOMETIMES IT’S BEST TO FALL
Your one true love betrayed you. Your parents abandoned you. The bills are piling on you. Illness is overtaking you. Your friends have turned on you. Emotions are crippling you. You have tried everything you know to try, only to be hurt and angered and discouraged again and again and again. Defeat is inevitable. You are tired of people encouraging you with euphemisms and clichés.
The church is guilty of turning God’s truth into clichés. One of them being the truth that rest and help can be found in God. We overuse the words and underuse the corresponding actions in our own lives. Truths like “come unto me all who are heave laden”, “just have faith”, “just trust in Jesus”, “God knows what’s best”, and “joy comes in the morning”. All these phrases are packed with truth, but phrases is all they are if our lives don’t reflect them.
We as Christians face the same trials, hurts, disappointments, and fears that unbelievers face. We put on our “super spiritual face” or play our “spiritual super hero games” in front of others. Then we hide who our God really is to those observing our lives.
Mandisa sings a song entitled “What if We Were Real”. Some of the lyrics read,
Well, I'm tired of saying everything
I feel like I'm supposed to say
I'm tired of smiling all the time
I wanna throw the mask away
Sometimes you just have a bad day
Sometimes you just wanna scream
Tell me I'm not the only one
Tell me that you feel just like me
What if we were real
What if we were real
We'd think a little less of ourselves
We'd care about someone else
'Cause we'd know just how they feel
Maybe we could let someone love us
Maybe we'd a little more like Jesus
Why can't we learn to real
If we were real with God, then we could be real with the world. We could turn the Christian cliché “just fall into the arms of Jesus” into reality. Sometimes it is better to fall: to fall down and helplessly reach for the Father, to fall back and rest in the arms of Jesus, to fall down in surrender and worship the Savior. Sometimes it is a good thing to fall.
