Didn't like Okra

Yesterday I've shared her my Okra harvest but this morning she complained that they were too hard. It didn't soften much even after boiling it.
So, to compensate I made another smoothie adding four okras and couple of spinach. She was right...I thought I was eating left over sticks
It was good I had to add more ice though because the taste was too rough.
Gotta stop with growing okras for now

It should be picked while still immature because it's fibrous, I usually fry it in butter, dip in soy and eat it with hot rice

@vandana7 any vegetable takes getting used to I guess and when we do that's the time we will really appreciate it and at times like it more than meat

Fry it in butter? @louievill this is the second time I've heard adding butter into it.

I am not fond of okra myself. I find them rather slimy but that is my personal taste. I have to say that the okra we see in the market here is green and small while the one you show in your picture seems riper and more mature. Could that be the reason that yours were too hard? I suspect that they need to be picked whilst they are small and still tender.

@vandana7 Well, the texture may be not so different from asparagus. I only know that I tried them once (cooked properly, as far as I know, by a West Indian chef) and it was not something I wanted to try again. They're expensive here (because they are imported) so I don't see the need to bother with them.

Hello @owlwings they are slimy but that what makes the fiber on it great. But I don't eat them often, only when it's needed to.

Try to harvest them younger. You will only let them mature if you want seeds for planting. I harvest moringa pods while they are babies because I hate the woody pulp.

@Letranknight2015 Harvest Okra before they turn fuzzy and furry. In case of moringga pods, harvest them while they are skinny as worms.

How young before I even harvest them? Often them turn into flower first then grows into pods @CaptAlbertWhisker at least few days.

You have to harvest okra or the lady finger while still young and cook it right away.. If it's old then the taste and texture is not good to eat

Okra is actually a favorite of mine.
Perhaps, you should have boiled it longer for it be softer?

It wasn't me that didn't boil the okra, so that's probably why it was rough @allen0187

When okra is older it becomes hard and the fibers are tough too. You have to choose the young okra. Even if you just steam it for a few minutes, it is so delicious dipped in lemon with a bit of fish sauce. My daughter loves it so much cooked like that.
Is that a red okra? I haven't seen a red okra yet, though I came to know that there are red okras.

Maybe the okra was too old already. Best to harvest them early on when they're still sweet and juicy.

Hello @almostoveryou Don't know how early the harvest should be, maybe it has something to do with how the okra is being grown.
