I Can Walk Again! Well, Sort Of.

This morning I finally got my walking boot, which means I got to walk for the first time since I broke my ankle over 6 weeks ago. Who knew that walking could be so terrifying? That first step was nerve-wracking and quite painful, but after that it got easier. I even managed to walk myself up the stairs to my apartment once I got home, although it admittedly took me a bit to do it, as I tried my best to put most my weight on my good leg and relied on one crutch so as not to put too much pressure down on my foot.
Once I got home I walked around a bit (still using the crutches, as instructed by my doctor, who said to gradually work up to walking without them.) Then I took the boot off so I could rest my ankle, as it was feeling pretty sore by that point. I put the boot on once more during the afternoon and walked around a bit in my apartment. Walking with that boot is going to take some getting used to.
I am glad to be semi-mobile again, but I definitely won't be walking any long distances any time soon!

Haha, I just bumped it on my desk a moment ago when I sat down!
This boot is REALLY going to take some getting used to. It's elevated, so I'm walking lopsided...my right leg is higher than my left leg, and it makes it awkward to walk. I do okay with the use of the crutches to help relieve some of the weight. I even managed to maneuver around the apartment earlier with only one crutch for support (I ordered a pizza for motivation -- had to get up and answer the door, and have a hand free to receive the pizza!
) but I was hurting quite a bit afterwards.
It is nice to not have to worry about toppling over and re-breaking my ankle when I have the boot on, at least.

@Ithink Gracefulness is not a quality which I possess...obviously.
I thought of maybe wearing a high-heeled boot on the other foot...but then realized I'd probably break my neck, or at least my other ankle, and quickly scratched that idea.
I'm definitely moving around very slowly...except yesterday when I went tromping to the door to get my pizza. Nothing like food to motivate me.

Thanks, me too! Hopefully within the next week I can lose the crutches. I can manage on one crutch (so I don't have to put my full weight on my injured ankle) but it's so awkward walking that way!

@Courtlynn They really are. And I am already clumsy to begin with, so I'm constantly tripping on them and am afraid I'm going to fall and break something else. lol

you should ask them for some lidocaine cream..it helps a bit with the soreness.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! I wonder if I called the orthopedist, if he would send a prescription over...then again, I don't exactly trust the receptionists to relay any messages I leave with them.

Be careful walking downstairs...I wasn't paying attention when I was carrying out the garbage and slipped and fell! It's crazy how fast things like that happen. I am just glad that I will eventually be able to walk again. I have a friend who is very sick and the treatment he's undergone for his disease has caused the bones in his upper legs to die...he is only 32 years old and will soon be unable to walk. So sad.

Take it one day at a time. What helped me when I first got the cast off my ankle when I broke it years ago, was to soak my foot in hot water with epsom salts. The water must be as hot as you can tolerate. This helped to loosen up the joints and ease some of the pain. I also worked my ankle while it was soaking, such as getting the joints moving again. This was my home physio remedy.
