Studying a New Language.

Hello guys! It’s Saturday afternoon here at my end. I chose to stay home, together with my daughter, instead of tagging along with my husband who is going to meet his childhood friend this afternoon. I have mentioned in my recent post that I am trying to learn to speak Korean, to read Hangul and to write Hangul. Sometimes,I want to give up. Learning new things, especially a new language, is quite a challenge when you’re already an adult . Do you agree? My mother tongue is Tagalog because I am Filipino. English is the second language in my country so almost all people are fluent in speaking English. Ilonggo is the dialect that I learned by ears because my mom communicates in this dialect whenever she speaks with her amigas and relatives. Eventually, I became conversant in Ilonggo. Hanguel is the most difficult to learn. Why?It is written in a different wasy. I have to memorize this characters along with their phonetic values. Before I could read them I should memorize the Korean characters first .There are 24letters in the Korean alphabet: 14 consonants and 10 vowels. The letters are combined together into syllable blocks. I believe that if I know how to read it will be easier for me tobuild my vocabulary then eventually I will be fluent in speaking Korean. Did you have to learn a new language? How many months did it take you to be fluent?

To learn a language is one matter, to be fluent it takes many months and you need to speak everyday with people who are of that language (mother born language).

@LadyDuck cool! Among those four languages, I think Spanish would be the easiest for me . Filipino language has a lot of borrowed words from Spanish.

@Iam_jauntyjen I am sure it will put you to a great advantage when you are able to haggle with vendors for products and such as well at the markets.

Thanks for that positive remark. Yes, I should keep in my that this is going to be another accomplishment. It makes learning the Hanguel exciting.

I don't think I could ever learn a new language at this point in my life, hell I can't remember what I went down the hall for half the time so learning a new language would be a challenge. Good luck with it, I am sure you will be able to pick it up. I have Filipina friends and they have tried to teach me their language, they sit and laugh and laugh, I just give up. lol

I have studied Mandarin but was not able to be fluent since I have no one to converse with. My Chinese friends are more into Fookien. My dad wants me to learn it for business purposes. Will go back to study it again.

I'm not good at learning languages. I went to a french evening class once and although I picked up a little I am nowhere near fluent. I think people who can learn new languages are really gifted

It's not easy to learn a new language. Because we need much time to practice and practice.

My daughter is learning Japanese now. Yes I think you need to know how to read and you should memorize the characters also. You are right it is much harder to learn if we are adult. Why do you need to learn Korean?

It is very hard to learn a new language. You need years to be able to speak and write fluently. I think Korean language is very difficult to learn compared to German language. Good luck and never give up.

Good luck! It depends on how much time you spend with studying the language daily. It is hard when you are adult and if you have a lot of tasks and only a few hours per week to learn.

When I started learning English at school, I didn't know much, maybe some writing and reading. It took me about 7 years to learn and pass the final test that included some talking. This is way too slow, I want to learn Russian and Hindi, amharic...I hope I will be able to hear and understand conversations, some writing and reading. If I start learning from now, let's see how long it will take.

@Iam_jauntyjen I can say for me also learning a new language is very hard. I learned some of Hebrew when I was growing up but not the way they speak Hebrew here so had to practically learn all over again here. It took awhile but then one day opened my mouth and words came tumbling out and no longer feared all the mistakes. It is a hard language to learn.
