Your Thoughts on Dance Competitions?

I will share my thoughts later when I can get them organized. My mind and emotions are currently a whirlwind. We have just got back from my grand daughter's dance competition. Hers was the only studio who did all clean, innocent dances to clean music. I just watched 7 hours of girating and twerking by girls from 3 yrs to 18 yrs old. Most of the costumes were very revealing as well. I fought back tears the whole time. Has anyone else attended a dance competition where your were shocked at how young girls were dressed and moving? My problem is not with the girls; they were just following instructions. Maybe I am just old fashioned and one of the few who has a problem with this.

Because "gyrating" is a common part of the culture (as far as it relates to dance) in the Caribbean where I grew up, in fact where I am now, I'm not averse to it in dance if managed well. It could get pretty adult and suggestive so it has to be managed in little girls. That's my thoughts on the movement... re: clothing, I would reserve judgement also because again it depends on the type of dance and the clothing that goes with that. I may not wear, for example, the same thing for a ballet class that I could wear to learn ballroom. Still, among young girls, that could also be managed.

These were very sexualized dances for little girls, even at kindergarten ages.

@gnatsmom Then that's going overboard. I think the dance instructors should know better though...

I have not seen a dance competition in years but I would have been disappointed too if little ones were presented that way.

@JolietJake that is good then. That is the way it should be.

@JolietJake I have attended some in the past that were beautiful works of art, but the one I saw yesterday...some of it was very sexualized...I just couldn't grasp why little girls who don't even think in those terms were being taught to dance like that.
