Lockdown at the preschool yesterday

We saw the helicopters circling overhead but didn't think much of it. The kids were in back, on the playground. Then a teacher rushed out from inside. "We're on lockdown! Get the kids inside!" We managed to stay calm and turned outside time into inside circle time with reading of stories. Half an hour later the lockdown was lifted. Turns out it was actually only a "shelter in place." The police had responded to a "domestic disturbance" two blocks away, and one of the participants had fled. That's all we know right now. Ever been involved I anything like that? I was secretly scanning nearby backyards as we rushed the kids inside.

I am glad it was nothing more serious. I have never been involved in anything like that.

I had another incident on the same day, which I'll write about in a later post. Berkeley and Oakland are interesting cities.

@TheHorse We escaped a bad accident last Sunday. A car entered the freeway (near the border) by the wrong side. We were going to Italy, it was a scary moment.

About 7 or 8 years ago i was teaching at a language school which is inside a university campus. Suddenly we received a phone call from the university admin that we need to get out of the building. Classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. There was a bomb threat. Fortunately it was just a threat.

I went to highschool near an air force base, during the Vietnam War Era. No one had cell phones, but there was an abundance of telephone booths. It was not unusual for us to have to evacuate due to bomb threats.

@GardenGerty It was really unusual for us because during that time there was a lot of terrorist attack. And we don't live near any Air Force or military base.

There was a criminal loose and the pre school got all the children inside, locked the doors so no one could come in and shoot the place up. Its to protect the children.

When I was a junior middle school student, one night during our sleep, we were woken up by our teachers. According to the teachers, there would be an earthquake soon. We waited on the playground till morning, luckily nothing happened.

Since when can people precisely predict earthquakes? Did you get any sleep?

@TheHorse No, we stayed on the playground all night and didn't sleep.

@caopaopao That does not sound like fun. Earthquakes are hard to predict precisely But it sounds (from Hawaii) like earthquakes can predict volcanic eruptions in some degree.

That's scary. A few years ago a man local to me killed someone and injured a cop and went on the run. The police thought he was hiding in the estate where I live and they blockaded the roads one morning and came running up the roads and looking into houses as a helicopter whirred above. It was a bit like a movie except I was terrified a murderer was about to jump into my back garden.

@mlgen1037 The teachers (some of whom were scared) did a good job of hiding their fear from the children.

We had a warning one time for all of us to stay in as a dangerous criminal was spotted that had escaped from a jail somewhere else. It was somewhat scary but we did alright, he was caught up in Erie later in the day. Our school has been in lock down and even thou I homeschool Tess it was scary as I have grandkids there.

So glad it turned out to be minor. It is a shame that we have to live in a society where we have to lock down schools and daycares due to violence or even possible violence. My son's school had a lockdown a few months ago. Someone escaped from a jail a few counties over and it was thought that he was spotted in our area. It did not last long thankfully.

@TheHorse He was spotted in another county over and they ended the lockdown in our area. They did not catch him until a few days later. He was out for almost a week.

There was a lock down not to long ago. It was put on everyone's phone messages. I don't know how long it lasted though, and I don't have kids in school, so it didn't affect me personally, but it did some of the beauticians, as I was getting my hair done at the time.

What was it related to? People who live closer to the oil refineries around here sometimes get "shelter in place" automated calls when there's a chemical leak or unusual smoke/fire plume.

@TheHorse Thats good that they acted quickly and without scaring the kids, you also have to look at it as it becoming the norm anymore. Kids are starting to be conditioned for these types of situations in school, really kind of sad.

@JudyEv I wonder how many of our parents let their kids see the news? When I worked in the "'hood," parents let their children watch all kinds of inappropriate stuff on TV.

@TheHorse I am sure you felt concerned for the kids. Lock down drills are now mandatory at the first of the year in our public schools. At the last school where I worked, about ten years ago or slightly more I remember the first time we had such a drill. I was in a third grade classroom and the kids were so scared, from the drill, that some of them were crying at the thought of a shooter.
