Double Fractures ~ I'm Losing my Mind!!!

If dealing with Doodles the cat's heart and knee problems weren't enough, we have received more rotten news. Our ice princess broke her ankle 5 days ago during early morning figure skating practice jumps. She didn't feel much pain, and kept practicing. Our granddaughter kept practicing, ran in a one mile race, and attended school. She finally admitted her foot hurt, but it wasn't swollen. Her parents gave her Tylenol. However, it ached her enough to go to the doctor. She was put in a boot, but her orthopedic surgeon saw two breaks, and she now has a cast. She cried when she called her coaches to tell them the bad news. They all got on the phone to tell her funny stories of all the injuries they received over the years and had the ice princess laughing. Although I am not laughing with this news, she should be back on the ice in over one month. The good news is she can leave for overnight camp as scheduled. I've never broken a bone. Have you?

That girl is amazing. Nothing will ever hold her down! And no, I've never broken a bone - is that bad luck to say so?

I hope you never break a bone, and I'm hoping it isn't bad luck saying so, or you and I will be in big trouble!

Oh poor kid, it is amazing she was able to do all that with broken ankles. It probably isn't a good thing. Anyway, I hope she will be back on the ice soon. Yes, I broke my left wrist once, and my right wrist once. I also have a slightly bent finger which I think happened from getting it slammed in a car door. It might have been broken I don't know.Something happened to it.

It's weird that her ankle didn't cause more discomfort. I'm sure it was a good thing to do all she did afterwards. Sigh. Triple ouch to you! The broken wrists I can understand. Our younger son broke one during wrestling practice. But the finger getting slammed in a car door is making me retch. OMG! How that must have hurt!

I had a broken wrist when I was seven and broke my humerus in my right arm,( ready for this?) arm wrestling, in a bar even. I am so sorry to hear about the ice princess. A month is not long to be off the ice it seems.

No, I'm not ready for this. Seriously? LOL! Our son broke his wrist during wrestling practice his junior year of school. There went his full scholarship to college! Thank you. Knowing her, she'd ask to skate in her cast.

That's her second break now, isn't it? I'm glad you've never broken any bones. Yes, I have. Right ankle and left leg just below the knee, and elbow when I was a kid. My youngest is currently in a boot with two broken bones in his right foot. I'm glad she'll be back on the ice in just over a month and will leave for camp on time. Have some chocolate. That usually helps all woes.

You are correct. The first break was on her other foot - the heel. The only good thing is that I can see her more, because she isn't busy skating! So sorry you broke your bones, but I guess kids heal up much faster than we adults would. Lol! I'm on a diet. No chocolate for me, although it would help with the awful woes we've been getting.

@just4him A girl has to do what a girl has to do. Lol! Thanks. I can stand to lose a few pounds. Would you believe that we haven't done a true grocery shopping since we've returned home? We eat out or order in most of the time. I eat more than my husband! Thanks so much about my ice princess. I just hope there are no long term problems, since she fractured her growth plate, too.

@DianneN You on a diet? Why? You don't look like you need one. It would help with all your current woes. I'm glad you're able to see her more, but unfortunate for the reason behind why you're able to. Life isn't always fair. I hope she heals fast.

Im surprised she didn't feel the pain from that and could have even made it worse- staying on it once it was fractured. Perhaps she doesn't feel pain strongly so should tell her parents even if it hurts a little bit. It would be awful if problems arise from her not reporting it. I feel sorry for her and hope it heals really well. I've had fractures and they are very painful.

I'm so sorry to hear that your granddaughter has a broken ankle! The last one was in her heal, I believe. She's not discouraged, it would take more than this, to bring her down:) She will be just fine, Dianne! I broke my nose and a pinky finger. Talk about hurt!

@DianneN Sorry, I spelled heel wrong, I can't spell any more! lol In high school I got 100% on a 500 word spelling test. Now, I can't spell my own name, sometimes And your granddaughter is more concerned about missing practice, than she is about herself!

Poor girl. She’s definitely a tough girl. I’ve never broken anything but I have sprained my right foot. It was a bike accident. I was riding on the street and fell on the side walk. My foot didn’t hurt too much at that moment, so I kept going. As the afternoon went on, my foot hurt more and more, until I couldn’t walk on it without it hurting.

@DianneN It could have been a lot worse. I put some ice on it, when I got home, and I had to use some crutches for a few days, but it could have been a lot worse. It wasn't pleasant, but I got through it.

I never had too. But my daughter had it when she was just about 4 year- old. She fell down and her arm was hurt. It was in a cast for about 3-4 months I think. She wrote a lot of things in her cast. Your granddaughter is so brave. Despite that, she still practiced.

@SIMPLYD I hope this is the last for her. Last time she only needed a boot. Not so this time. Bath time can be a huge problem with a cast. I don't know how they are handling it. How are things with you and your family? I think of you often.

I feel so bad reading this about your grand daughter. Tell her, a concerned myLotter is praying for her complete recovery of her foot. And, yes, all three bones in my left leg (two bones below the knee & the bone above the knee have been broken when I was hit by a car at age 12).

@DianneN You are really having 4 awful weeks, let's hope that problems will fix soon. I fell playing while we were vacationing. I needed surgery to repair the elbow, it was a very long recovery. I have a long scar on my right arm and the elbow still hurts when the weather changes.

Oh no! I broke my ankle 10 weeks ago and it’s turned out to be a much slower process than I thought. I spent 5 weeks in a boot and then 4 in a brace. I just started physical therapy now and it’s still hard to walk and I can’t walk stairs correctly. Broken bones suck

@DianneN Yes she will probably have a much easier time! She needs to keep her leg elevated as much as possible. I was also told by a friend that a hairdryer on the cool setting blowing air down the cast will help if she gets itchy.
