Teachers Strike In Arizona

A few weeks ago in Arizona our teachers went on strike. It was a difficult time for families, as their children were out of school and many of the parents need to be at work. However, this strike was necessary. Arizona is one of the lowest on education list. It's crazy that they had to go through this. They wanted a 20% raise. They ended up getting only 5%. This is super sad. Teacher's have to pay for most of their classroom supply out of pocket. We are talking about people who teach our children. They are teaching the future generations of our world! What do you think? Do you think teachers should be making more?

I guess they couldn't wait for the raise, I don't blame them. Not easy to teach kids over there.

The lack of school funding in general in this state has been horrible for decades. We're at the bottom of the rankings in the nation for many things, and at the beginning of the year schools were only receiving something like $2,000 per student in funding from the state for the entire year.

Where is your information coming from? They did get their 20%, although the full amount isn't going to be effective until 2020. There's a 10% increase going into effect with the 2018/2019 school year, then two additional increases coming in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. That plan also provides for millions of dollars in flexible funding to schools.

I will have to do more research. The information came from several friends I have who work for one of the school districts as well as my mother. What I heard was that information was put out to make it look like they got their 20% raise, but when they went in for more information, it wasn't so. But I will see what else I can find. Thank you for your information.

I think teachers in many countries get a raw deal. Some say that teachers get holidays with pay when their students are on Easter, summer or Christmas break - but most teachers will have papers to grade and lessons to prepare during that break period.
