Root canals, are they necessary?

What is the purpose of a root canal when it costs so much? My teeth seem to be going bad faster than I can get them fixed. I try and take care of them but it's like I don't take care of them at all. I am wondering what the real purpose of root canals are if they later have to be pulled anyway. Have any reasoning for this?
