Many of you know that I live alone. Tonight, as I was mylotting, the phone rang. It was the voice of my daughter saying "Mommy, help me". Then there was another voice, a man´s, telling me that they had my daughter and that they would harm her if I did not sent them a very big amount of money.
They did not use the name I usually use (I have 4) so I called my daughter by the other phone. She was fine. She called my other daughter and she was ok too.
I went to fetch the policemen´s phone and they were here very soon. The policeman I let in (after I saw his uniform and his policemen´s car, had great patience. And he waited until I made a sort of overnight bag and brought me to Claudia´s house overnight.
So, here I am. In Vicente´s room while the poor darling is sleeping in the couch.
It is almost 2 am here, but I cannot sleep. But my 2 daughters are safe.[em]

Sleep tight. In Spanish, we say "dream with little angels"

I know. And the cops were heroes! But I guess they are running to every call because a few days ago a youngster killed a lady around 30 blocks from my house.

That sounds horrible. Fortunately, your daughters are very safe. It is wise of you to call your daughter first to make sure she's safe.

It was important that the bad guys called me by my first name. They stole my ID when they burglarized my house last year.

@josie_ I put an alarm system, a couple of lights that glow outside at night and I bought a German Shepherd. But my Luna is still a puppy so she will have to be trained first.

@marguicha _I will not have peace of mind if this will be a recurring thing. The burglars think you are an easy target because they obviously know you live alone. Have you consider having someone to stay with you or maybe get a guard dog?

I would get that money in exchange for a daughter. But that is not the way to do it.

I hope laws change. A youngster is a minor here until he is 18. Before that, he can get away with anything.

ARe you sure it was your daughter's voice you heard or did they have a recording or someone who sounded like her. This sounds a bit like a variation of those schemes where they call grandparents and pretend to be a grandchild overseas who's in trouble and needs money now to get out of it. How very scary this must have been for you. I'm glad it was just a scam and not a real threat.

@marguicha At least you had a way of checking on her so you would not get scammed.

It is more than a prank. Bad guys have cellphones in jail and they buy stolen ID cards. Then, through the web, they get the phone of the owner of the ID card and call. Luna lives outside my house (inside a high fence) but she will be of no help until she has grown. But I placed an alarm system and lights with night sensors in the outside.

@marguicha We asked to have our phones not listed, nobody can get our numbers. It seems it works because we do not even receive commercial calls.

Oh my. I'm sorry you had to go through that stress especially because it was about your daughters' safety. Here in Mexico we also receive those kinds of calls, it is obviously extorsion they call saying they have your son or daughter and put someone on the phone to fake their need of help and sometimes they call saying "hey cousin, it's me" but they don't give a name until YOU fall into their trap and mention a name yourself.
It is quite scary but it is always best to make sure your loved one is fine before coming to conclusions right away. Just be careful with these type of calls. It is very common here, some people already know and they continue the call to just mess around with them and turns out they are calling people who don't even have children, so that's how you know they just randomly call, they don't really have any of your personal information or know any names.
I'm glad you and your loved ones are fine.
