I'll be willing to bet that you didn't see a "c," a second cover coming, did you? We are at #21c in today's Play it Again, Sam, and it's a special one: The Danse Society's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt."
Before I get to the song, even though I've used them a few times in my music series' here on MyLot, you probably haven't heard of The Danse Society. One of my favorite bands, The Danse Society is a British goth group that also dabbled in alternative genre's such as synth pop. Originally fronted by vocalist Steve Rawlings, the band now features vocals from former Blooding Mask vocalist Maethelyiah.
And my GOD, can this woman sing! Do me a favor, and just listen to this version of "Hurt," in it's entirety, and tell me I'm wrong to get chills everytime I listen to it.
The group recorded "Hurt" to benefit the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Sophie Lancaster was a goth girl who was murdered in England in 2007, as she walked through a park with her boyfriend, Robert Maltby. The couple was attacked, because they were goths, by a group of teenagers. Sophie, who went into a coma, died 13 days later.
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation focuses on "creating respect and understanding of subcultures within our communities." The foundation also works alongside police and politicians to protect members of subcultures from hate crimes, and to ensure that they are protected by law.

Tribute of 'Hurt' (originally written by Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and covered famously by Johnny Cash) in support of the Sophie Lancaster Found...

Goth is kind of a strange genre. Other than to those of us that listen to it!

I never heard this version. She has a cool witch type voice. Should work for Disney.

She certainly does this song justice but I know other songs titled Hurt too and this is probably a different one but one that always brings me to tears when Johnny Cash sings it here in his old age.
"Hurt" official music video performed by Johnny Cash. This song is about realizing consequence and regret. It sends a powerful message that we should all pro...

I wrote about three different versions of the song. I figured ahead of time that Johnny would get the best response.

It's getting worse over here, too. All the intolerant racists are feeling empowered these days.

You know what's amazing about this? It's like they are three completely different songs, with three completely different meanings. The NIN original being what Reznor said was about despair that he was in at the time, giving you insight into his pain. Then Cash's version is a look back at a life not-so-well-lived (thanks to the substance abuse and the lifestyle he lived), almost a prayer for forgiveness. And this? It's like the victim of the crime haunting her killer.

Ooh, that's a great comparison that I didn't even think of. Hopefully, Sophie is doing just that!
