We all know to wash all supermarket produce before consuming, right? It also makes sense that buying local is a good idea. Why? Because it is not as likely to have bacteria buildup that could be harmful.
A cheap and easy way to wash produce is to use about two teaspoons of baking soda to your rinsing water. This is effective in making produce healthier as well as cleaner.
Root vegetables like carrots or potatoes need a good scrubbing but, soft fruits and mushrooms do not. Doing so can increase the likelihood of bacteria being introduced into the food. Be careful of your more delicate leafy greens too.
Apples, onions, melons, bananas, tomatoes, and potatoes can be stored at room temperature for at least a week. Fruits like pears and peaches, even avocadoes, can be left out to ripen before refrigerating.
Don't wash all your produce and then store it. This can actually cause bacteria to develope. Wash before eating.

I always was my produce before eating. Some already come prewashed (leafy veggies) and I don't worry about that.
