The seas of the world are thought of as being deep but what about lakes and rivers? Crater lakes, like the Crater Lake in Oregon, are very deep. In fact, the Crater Lake is the deepest in the United States. But, what about the world?
The Lake Baikal in a rift valley in Russia is the deepest at 5,387 feet deep. It also has the largest surface area of any lake in Asia. It is 12,248 square miles around. This means that one-fifth of all non frozen fresh water in the entire world is in this lake.
Lake Baikal is also the oldest lake at 25 million years old.

Lake Baikal sounds beautiful. Hopefully it has gotten through the last 200 years unscathed from polution through industrialization.

That is interesting. I know about both lakes. I wonder if there are strange creatures down under the water.
