Going to Senior School

My granddaughter is almost at the end of her final year at primary school. In September she will be going up to senior school and I can hardly believe the time has gone so quickly. (She is 11).
Yesterday I went up to her school of choice and bought everything she needs in the way of uniform which came to £123 ($161) which is quite expensive as this doesn't include school shirts, shoes or hockey boots.
Not all countries have a school uniform although I can understand why our schools enforce this as then there is no difference in how the children look so no snobbery regarding expensive/cheap clothes and it does save their normal clothes from wearing out.
Does your country insist that kids wear a uniform or can they wear what they like?

Oh yes. All schools here grade school high school, even college has uniforms. This is good to identify the students coming from the school. This is a requirement here in our country. Even teachers wear uniforms but professors in college sometimes they don't have.

That's interesting. Our teachers don't wear uniforms here. I suppose they might in the posh schools but I don't know of any,

@Peach10 I think it's nice to see a group of children out on a trip with their teacher all dressed the same and it certainly saves on clothes.

We had to wear uniform also you could not enter the school wearing ordinary clothes.
Time goes very fast sometimes.
Hope she enjoys her new part of the School.

All the kids have been off school now since the middle of June and some even earlier.
I forget sometimes that the kiddies over there are in there till something of July.
Its a good idea to get them used to it a bit.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Yes ours break up on 25th July so still have another couple of weeks yet. I have to go to my granddaughter's leaver's do next week. I always get very emotional at these events. I will probably cry!

She is looking forward to it. Next week they have what is called "turnaround week" where they spend one day at the school on their own. The rest of the school have that day off and the following week with all the other children.

Our school district here where I live instituted a school uniform requirement several years ago, and you would have thought it was the end of the world. So many parents fought the school board on their decision that in the end they relented and did away with the uniform requirement. Personally, I was all for it, as it would have saved me all the trouble of always having to find the right style clothes every year before school starts. Having to buy one type of uniform would have made shopping a breeze for me!

I think it makes life easier. I just have 2 sets, one to wash and one to wear and put it all out the night before. I wonder why parents can't see that.

@sprite1950 I was much lazier...I bought five sets for each of my two kids. One for each day of the week. And then I washed them all on the weekends. haha

@moffittjc Nothing wrong with that. I bet they lasted longer too. I have 5 shirts for her as she can be quite smelly in the heat!

Yes the primary schools aren't too bad here but the senior schools require so much so it is expensive.

@JudyEv I have found it's the sports gear that is most expensive. They have to have their names embroidered on their PE shirts and have a waterproof coat for when it's cold which costs £32 ($42)

@sprite1950 When I went to school we needed summer and winter shirts, a skirt, a tie, a blazer plus gear for sports.

@hereandthere My granddaughter is an only child so if her uniform is in good condition when she grows out of it I will give it away.

@sprite1950 i have many siblings, so only have a few - 3 white blouses and 2 skirts - so they have to be washed and ironed mid-week. then it's passed on to the younger sibling if they go to the same school next year - if they are still presentable, like the skirt, and maybe let out the hem.

We have Infants, juniors and senior schools. Usually the infant and juniors are combined. They go to senior school when they are around 11. I'm not sure how it works in other countries.

It's quite scary when I think back to my younger days. I used to think people of the age I am now were really ancient!

Hi Snowdrop. Our country insists on uniforms for both private and public schools. But one will know if you are from the private or public school.

It's the same here but each school has its own uniform. College is different, there is no uniform once you leave school.

I think it is good too if a child gets lost for any reason like on a school trip. If they have a uniform on people know where they are from.

In college we can wear our own clothes. The posh colleges used to wear uniforms but I don't think they do now.

Yeah.. We have uniforms in schools. I feel it is good to maintain the decorum of the school and also to teach students equality and keeping them away from flaunting clothes
