The peridot gemstone is a lovely shade of green. It is the August birthstone. A symbol of prosperity and opportunity it is gem-quality olivine which is a silicate mineral. It is one gem that only occurs in one color, an olive green. The color can vary from yellow to olive, however, depending on the amount of iron that is contained in the crystal structure. Peridot can be found in lava and meteorites. It is considered precious because large crystals that are used to cut gems are rare. The largest cut peridot olivine is a specimen found in the Smithsonian Museum that is 310 carats.

It is a lovely birthstone. I also like the emerald green in May which was my mother's birthstone.

Do you have a picture? You're a bit over my head here. What do "olivine" and "silicate" mean?

I love the look of green stones. I had heard of this one. So pretty. I also like emeralds.
