Most people cannot speak foreign languages well

Hello my friends. In this post I want to talk about the fact that most people when confronted with the fact of living in a foreign country, they will hardly be able to speak that foreign language. However, my personal abilities to speak in languages other than my native one are pretty good in my opinion compared to most people's ability to do it. Perhaps this also has something to do with the fact that they started teaching me English since the second grade in school. My point is that if I were to go to Great Britain or to Spain for example, I will be speaking English or Spanish really good because my brain has been able to adapt to these languages. I am pretty sure that both my pronunciation and my grammar will be close to perfect. However, if a British or Spanish person would come into Romania and they would try to learn how to speak and pronounce in Romanian language they will be very far from the truth. They will be unable to properly use grammar and to pronounce words correctly. Of course that I would understand what they mean even though their grammar and their pronunciation is horrible but thing is that their brain is simply unable to adapt to speaking foreign languages in my opinion. I don't think that I will ever see a foreigner in Romania to properly use grammar and properly pronounce words in Romanian language. Perhaps it is also due to the fact that did not grow up watching any Romanian movies whatsoever. The reason why I mentioned watching movies here is because I consider that movies help a lot. Due to the fact that I grew up seeing many movies in which English is the main language spoken, I have been able to learn how to pronounce most of the words in this language and due to the fact that I have also been taught English in school ever since I was 8 years old this also helped especially with grammar and spelling and writing. Perhaps this is the main reason why I am capable of speaking English in a proper way. When it comes to Spanish I basically learned most of the things from TV. I was not taught Spanish language in school except for half year when I was in college / university but still my Spanish is much better than the Spanish that Africans speak for example. I mentioned Africans because when I was in Spain for a short period of time, I worked side by side with some Africans and even though they had stayed in Spain for much longer than I stayed in Spain, their Spanish was much worse than my Spanish. How do you estimate your skills of learning and speaking foreign languages? Can you share some information?

You are mostly right. I worked with some africans in Italy and I was speaking a better italian than they did even though I learned it by watching italian movies/cartoons. My english is good, not perfect, but it's ok I think. I used to think my french was pretty good, but then I went to France... Man, they are fast talking! I could speak it no problem, but it was hard to follow them. Movies help a lot, but only when you're visiting a country, you can see how good you are .

that's correct, I believe though that if you move to the other country and practicing the language you can get really good with it.

i think some people have an ear/a talent for language, while others don't. in the case of moving elsewhere, some can learn but not pronounce properly. but i think it also depends on from whom you learn from, the people you interact with (at home, neighborhood, at work, etc) but i agree it helps when you've been taught since grade school to college and regularly exposed to various media - school books, novels, comic books, magazines, cartoons, tv shows, movies, etc before the internet.
