Caste Reservations - Is it necessary or not??

As I live in India, nowadays, there are protests carried out by certain communities in order to get reserved seats in Education and Legal Sectors. In Maharashtra, the Maratha community holded the protests and carried out rallies for their right to demand reservation from government.
The protests took a violent turn wherein they burnt buses, police vehicles and blocked roads in Thane and Mulund areas. The police was injured too in this rucus.
I dont understand why this people demand reservation?? Why can't they work hard and get a seat on their merit? I don't know when all this things will end!

I think reservations based on caste is of no use now. Initially when it was started in 1950s, that time there was a need of it because there were socially backward classes and communities called untouchables.
But now the scenario is totally different. Untouchables is now just in history books. Fortunately, we have won the equality in caste aspect. Now what is much needed is reservations on the basis of per capita income Or gross income and not on the basis of caste.
