Day 36
Mark 12:18
Mark 12:18 Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,
19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.
22 And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.
23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? For the seven had her to wife.
24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
37 David therefore himself calls him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.
Laws have a way of being misinterpreted. People like to put their own spin on a law, making it more or less than it was intended to be.
One such law, God gave to Moses regarding keeping the family line going, and that was to raise up children for their brothers in case they died without children.
Deuteronomy 25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her.
6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
7 And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuses to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;
9 Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.
10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.
Jesus told the Sadducees, they erred when they spoke of the law, and told them two important things. One, there is no marriage in heaven, and two, God is the God of the living, not the dead.
As Christians, you have hope about eternal life. Your mortal body will pass from this life, but you will still be alive for eternity in heaven, and will be as the angels in heaven. You will not be angels, but you will be like them.
A scribe also asked Jesus a question regarding the law, as to what was the greatest commandment. Without hesitation, Jesus told him what the greatest, and second greatest law is. I find it interesting the scribe told Jesus he answered well. Up to then Jesus had spoken about the Law of Moses to the people, letting them know the true intent of the law, and not what the Pharisees and Sadducees told them was God’s intent. Even not knowing Jesus was the Son of God, the author of the Law, he should have expected a true answer from him.
As Christians, you know you are to study God’s Word so you know what it says, and what the truth is. Then when someone asks you questions, you will know the truth of God’s Word, and will answer rightly.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
You can’t know God’s Word unless you study it. It was the scribe’s duty to study and know the Law of Moses, so when Jesus answered his question regarding the law, he heard the right answer. Jesus told him he wasn’t far from the kingdom of heaven. Meaning that it wouldn’t take him long to know he was talking to his Messiah.
Do you spend time in God’s Word, studying it so you know what is true and what isn’t when someone questions you regarding what it contains? If not, it’s not too late to begin your study.
Let’s pray: Father, help me know the truth of your Word, and give a right answer when asked about what your Word contains. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
